I guess "Airsoft" is the modern term for pellet gun or BB gun... out of touch on that!

I have a problem with both dogs and pigeons.

I don't care about hurting the birds but I don't want to hurt the dogs, just get them scared.
My range is about 50 feet max. but always more than 20 feet. I don't want something that will break the skin, but sting like hell.

The selection here is limited but rather spendy, would rather do an Amazon purchase or the like. I am cheap, less than $50.

I bought a pistol for a grandson a while back but it broke in just a week or so, don't want super cheap junk! I do like the idea of those 6mm plastic airsoft BBs

Any ideas or recommendations?

thanks!

I have one like this link that I use for dogs, woodpeckers on the house, etc. It runs off of 4 AA batteries and fires full auto. This seems like overkill, but airsoft BB's tend to have slightly unpredictable trajectories, so the full auto gives a shot gun effect ensuring a hit or two with lots of additional scare factor.

Beeman makes a decent dual caliber (.17 and .22) air rifle that won't break the bank. You can usually find it at the local Walmart for around $125. It comes with interchangeable barrels and a scope.

If you want a high quality, high dollar air rifle, check out the Benjamin Rogue .357 air rifle. They do run in the $1,000-$1,200 range.

I'm not exactly an expert, but Airsoft refers to a gun designed to fire those plastic BBs as opposed to a Pellet or metal BB. Look at the biodegradable versions.

I'm a bigger fan of the pistols just because you can keep them near the back door on a shelf to keep critters away. Look for a CO2 version rather than the spring fired, and in the case of a pistol, and decide if you want blowback or non-blowback. The non-blowback is more powerful because it's not using some of your CO2 to operate the slide.

If you look up a Taurus 24/7 CO2 pistol, it runs about $50 on Amazon. Non-blowback, around 380 FPS.

If you don't mind spending a bit more, there's an Umarex Walther P99 that I prefer, but it's around $65.

I have several high-priced powerful spring-piston air pistols that fire pellets that will kill a coyote at 25 yards with a head shot. However, there's a number of cats in my neighborhood that try to kill the squirrels in my trees. I like the squirrels and I don't like the cats, but I don't want to kill or injure the cats.

A Daisy Red Ryder BB gun is perfect for my purposes. It stings like H*LL but does not break the skin further than about 25-30 feet and really irritates cats. Don't shoot them closer than that or it WILL penetrate the skin.

It's cheap, does the trick, and they stock them at Wal-Mart.

The cats learn to recognize the sound of the BBs sliding in the barrel when you aim, and they recognize the sound of the action cocking. More often than not nowadays, they are gone before I can aim. That's all I'm looking for, anyway. Just chase them away from my yard.

Professor

You and I have opposite problems. After paying several hundred dollars for repairs to my roof caused by squirrels I want to get rid of ALL of them in my yard, permanently. I have a Remington (made in China though) .177 caliber that will produce about 1100 fps. It WILL take out a squirrel within 100 feet. It's noisy though, nearly as much noise as a .22. Fun and cheap plinking.

I really like the looks of the Daisy Red Ryder BB gun... 350fps, low tech, retro, etc.
:good:

but my mail box is in California and Walmart says this:
"You must be 18 years old to purchase this product. The sale or shipment of this product to residents of California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Puerto Rico and Canada is prohibited."

I have squirrels too, and I like them. The local critters have a pretty good balance, so we have no issues with them. It is the dogs that give me grief.
However I don't want skin piercing power at 25 or 30 feet.

Daisy Red Ryder BB gun

CA law has restrictions on the sale of BB guns to those under 18. Walmart probably doesn't want the hassle and liability of internet sales to CA due to the age restrictions. Bet you can find them at a physical store though.

Remember "The Christmas Story?"

Although it "could put your eye out," that was what he wanted for Christmas. Probably will be on sale pretty soon ...

How about one of these:

Non-Lethal Paintball (at least for the dogs) and the owners might appreciate the new colors of rovers coat.

You didn't mention what setting this is in (urban vs. rural). Makes a big difference.

#1 safety rule never point a gun at something you don't want to kill.

There are many pellet guns that are just as lethal as a .22 LR gun.

Have some fun with it.
Catch the dogs with a live trap and soak them down with some sort of stinky chemical (Liquid A$$). Attach an anon. note to the collar asking that the owner keep their pet in their yard. Rattle the cage and let them go knowing the owner will have to deal with the smell when they get home. That may be enough to discourage them from coming around.

The birds...I would build a potato gun. Ram some wadding down the barrel and pour dog food on top. Add a little hair spray and you have a pretty good shot gun. Close range and it is lethal to birds, little farther out, it would simply scare them off.

Potato guns are good fun anyway. They are very powerful, not something to take lightly. At close range, all that will be left will be feathers.

Beware that pigeons may be protected with special county/city codes and potentially state laws. People have been turning them loose and cooping them at night for a LONG time. Many are used in races and are quite valuable.

EDIT: In addition, they are considered a game bird in my area and require a hunting license and have special seasons. Lot's of ways to get in trouble.

I had a problem with 2 dogs attacking my livestock.

My first instinct was to grab a shotgun and end the problem.
I live at the edge of the city limits in the middle of 13 acres of fields.

I could probably get away with it and would probably be within my rights. I may also get dragged into a bunch of BS that I'd rather not deal with (both the law and my neighbors).

My second choice will be a paint ball gun loaded with pepper spray balls.

those "rats with wings" are NOT protected here, I am quite sure of that.
