Granted he is a Lawyer, and has a masters in Geography, can he offer a professional opinion as an expert witness regarding geospatial data, and is he practicing surveying without the appropriate license??ÿ Just really genuinely curious.

People with such resumes scare me.?ÿ Too many times they are focused on adding to the list of credits more than they are the successful completion of whatever you need them to do for you.

@holy-cow?ÿ

His podcast on the URISA website is what drew my consternation and curiosity.

He's getting a following in the GIS community to see why they should be able to become professional expert witnesses, and I'm confident he's dancing along the line of survey without a license. It's what the legal side that doesn't want to be a surveyor is aiming for in my opinion.

Either way, I'm happy to defend the profession, and poke at him with my QTip whilst I'm surmising which windmill I'll Target next. Viva la Playa!!!!

No, he's not saying that he'll determine boundary locations or anything like that.?ÿ Anyone can use geospatial data, total stations, GPS, etc, as long as they're not pretending to show someone where their property lines or flood zone limits are.

It seems to me that if the courts have accepted him as an expert in the fields that he is testifying in, then that answers your question. If the opposing attorneys could have excluded him by accusing him of practicing land surveying without a license, they surely would have.

Besides all that, he's a bomb technician, and he has all his fingers. That says a lot right there.

It looks to me like he is being careful of not stepping over the land. There is some overlap between attorneys and land surveyors, and the exact line over which one should not cross is not usually precisely defined.?ÿ

@peter-lothian The fact he has all of his fingers tells me he isn't very experienced.

Hey guys,

Search engines are amazing things. ????

First, I am highly respectful of the bright line between what I do and the practice of surveying. I have read the state statues numerous times, as well as ALL of the surveying profession's disciplinary cases. I regularly confer with my local surveyors about where the line is between our work, give presentations where I adamantly direct the Realtors in Missouri to use surveyors, and I regularly hire surveyors when the situation calls for it. (I have invoices) I have also advised at least 10 different attorneys that their case and client would be better served by hiring a surveyor, rather than me. I respect the hell out of surveyors and the profession. When my son was in his twenties I made a pretty strong pitch for you career path.?ÿ

I also do lots of precision geospatial work surveyors have declined. I use your math, control points, tools, and techniques without any guilt to solve spatial problems that don't involve me opining on a property boundary. It only feels dirty at first.

Jitterbogie, It's kinda cute that you think I am seeking a "following in the GIS community." I'm generally viewed in my state and local GIS community as anywhere from a libertarian contrarian heretic to just a grumpy old a*****e.?ÿ I'm not the GIS messiah; Jack Dangermond has that covered.

I'd be glad to answer any question you may have. Please post them here.

Chris

@geovelo?ÿ

Fair enough and duly noted.?ÿ I'm also a GIS person, and planning my GISP as time allows to get it along with my survey license.

The URISA platform has been an interesting experience for me because I have seen the catty commentary and worked inside that environment and left because of the discourse along the Why can't we be licensed.....blah blah blah.?ÿ

I appreciate your candor and absolutely love the fact that you're monitoring your traffic and from whence it comes from to your website. I also appreciate your trajectory as it's similar to my own save I never served, and respect and appreciate your service more than my simple windmill tilting would infer.

Your career in law and geospatial is along the leading edge of the schism that does exist unfortunately in the two realms, and I still believe the solution is absolutely about staying separate and building strong bridges between the two realms because I'm fairly certain no GIS person will willingly dip active flowing sanitary sewers, and most field people in survey won't ever feel comfortable in a desk job unless they decide it's the best thing to do for their trajectory.

That being said...

What's more worrisome in the EOD realm a partially sheared mech-time fuze or an intact impacted pizeo-electric fuze?

I look forward to learning more from your career in geo and law, and maybe even the EOD work at a conference over coffee or something.

@jitterboogie?ÿ

Pizeoelectric fuzes (think RPG) are the crazy girlfriend of fuzes.?ÿ They are 'grab a cop's gun' crazy and are best remotely disrupted.

I look forward to meeting you and having that cup of coffee.?ÿ

Chk.?ÿ?ÿ

My exposure to the EOD section was all private environmental work, and I learned a deeper respect for the community as a whole while supporting them in logistics and as a scientist. Jeepers they can drink a lot....

Looking forward to it too.
