Not a fisherman in the bunch??ÿ In dream land, that's what I'd be doing.?ÿ If I was forced to retire tomorrow, I'd still be driving my boys around to all their practices and games and love every minute of it.
Well, it kinda happened to me.?ÿ When I left full time career of surveying/photogrammetry I was so burned out I wanted nothing to do with it.?ÿ ?ÿHad 3 summers of flying tourists seeing the sites of Alaska in twin engine planes and float planes.?ÿ ?ÿThen Cancer hit me hard, stage IV, gave me 40% chance of making it 4 months.?ÿ ?ÿ3 years later I am still here.?ÿ I cherish every day and have fun.?ÿ Live comfortably in a beautiful full convivence cabin 100 miles off the grid.?ÿ ?ÿTravel a lot, fish a lot, go play in the airplane a lot.?ÿ Got to play 5 gigs with a good band from Austin touring Alaska. Now I try to give back to surveying by doing occasional presentation, and participate in Mentoring Mondays.?ÿ Get a hoot out of listening to the Geoholics.?ÿ Some people never make it to your scenario due to health.?ÿ ?ÿRetire as soon as you can, I wish I did three years earlier.?ÿ Retirement can be just not working full time, work gigs if and when it suits you.

Thanks for the update Mike, glad to see you're still living life to the max?ÿ value and then some! Carry on!!!!

@hpalmer?ÿ
Jerry Broadus said he was on a cruise; he told the other travelers he was an Attorney and a Land Surveyor.
They only wanted to hear survey stories...

You won't get a chance to make those memories again, you can always make more money
I cherish every day and have fun.?ÿ
Words to LIVE BY!!!

@northernsurveyor tarpon and a jack on a fly??ÿ Lots of Austin surveyors playing music in the 80's - burning candles both ends.
glad you are still going and beating C - keep it up and thanks for the update and advice
@hpalmer yep, only caught one Tarpon under 100 pounds and it was 60.?ÿ All on the fly rod.?ÿ Going back again in January, then off the coast of Panama in May for the real superbowl of saltwater fishing.?ÿ Having a custom 17wt built for that trip.
@northernsurveyor blue marlin??ÿ Be sure and post pictures.?ÿ Tarpon on east cost of central americas?

No Blue Marlin for me.?ÿ I've caught a Black Marlin at 170#, that was enough.?ÿ Sailfish, big yellowfin Tuna, big Roosterfish and Dorado.?ÿ ?ÿIts near Cuiba, a UNESCO maritime preserve, only two permits a year to fish it. Its an invitational thing, only 12-16 anglers, I'm leading the flyfishing maniac friends.?ÿ
Yes Nicaragua and Costa Rica for Tarpon.

That is hard core. Not sure my tore up rotator and beat up elbow could handle those forces. Besides, I still have a long way to go in perfecting my double haul. Think I'll stick with the silvers for the time being.
While I wasn't forced to retire I did, well almost.?ÿ I work about 8 hours per week visiting construction sites analyzing and reporting on sediment and erosion control.?ÿ At least 4 of those 8 hours are spent in my truck and then another 2 hours preparing the reports.?ÿ It get me out of the house and provides some "play money".
