What is the best E-Reader on the market today?

I know Deral loves him I-Pad. But, that isn't exactly an E-Reader alone.

Besides, best involves more than just capability. Things like Price come into the picture as well.

So, considering capability, afford-ability, flexibility and price, what is the best E-Reader?

I also have an iPad and, although I really love it for a lot of things, and I do use it for one, It is too heavy for an e-reader compared to my mother-in-law's Kindle or my wife's Nook; both of which are excellent. The e-readers, that is . 🙂

Careful Don. For a second there it was sounding like you were saying your wife and her mother were too heavy. 😉 Thin ice man, thin ice.

Have a great holiday weekend.

My business partner has a nook and my brother has an iPad. Both are good E-Readers, but you can do much more with the iPad. Email, watch movies, etc. But it is 4 times as much money. I am thinking about getting one E-Reader that is and haven't made up my mind. Leaning toward the kindle, only because I use amazon so much. I also have kindle on my Mac Book and I've gotten used to it.

I just received yesterday a tablet that I bought to play waith.

It is a Pandigital R90L200. A full blown. Android based machine. I have just started playing with it and it seems quite good. I do like the eReader part of it. Looks like it has lots of possibilities.

I paid $90 for it from a site www.1saleaday.com - it is supposedly a factory refurb model, but it looked factory new to me.

The problem with the site where I bought it is that it was a one day deal. It may or may not come back. Actually the site is worth watching because you never know what they are going to have and, if nothing else, they have a good daily joke.

> you can do much more with the iPad.

UNLESS you root the Nook and install a full Android ROM. 🙂

I bought my wife a kindle. She loves being able to read it. The new technology is the E-Ink (electrophoretic ink) display. It is very easy to read in sunlight, or anywhere. It is much closer to reading paper. It is also going for a good price these days. I know the nook is the big seller anymore, but don't discount the Kindle if you want it strictly for books. I don't know if the nook has that same background. I highly respect Wendell's knowledge on that matter.

I just got the new Iconia Tab 100. It is a 7-inch tablet. I like it. I didn't want the big 10' things. It also had the latest in gps technology that can get you close and comes up faster. (a-gps?) assisted-gps which shortens the time to first-fix. It is not as good of an e-reader, though. It is tough in the sunlight and the reflection is horrible in daylight. I will try to find a screen cover that takes down some of the glare.

If I were you, I would at least test-drive the products. You may prefer the basic black-and-white kindle.

I have a Nook and really like it. I like being able to carry ALL of my books with me. It also downloads PDF files so I have my Users Manual for my Carlson software on it. That comes in handy sometimes.
I think the best reader is the Nook Color reader. I have a friend that has one and he really enjoys having his magazine subscriptions on it. The color photos in them look really good.
I like having an e-reader that is just an e-reader. The size and weight of the nook is just about right. I even found a cover for mine that has a built-in light that runs on AA batteries for low light reading.

My wife and I both have a Kindle, and it is a great reader. I love the thousands of classic free books available on Project Gutenberg. Just read The Wrong Box by Stevenson - you know it is funny when I laugh out loud.

Bruce-that is cool.

I can recommend Frederick Marryat, a Royal Navy Captain who wrote novels in the 1830s and 1840s. Mr. Midshipman Easy is a good read.

Here is a list:

My goodness, he had an adventuresome life. I just read about him in Wikipedia. Most interesting man. I'll try the novel shortly.

I just bought a Nook color a couple of hours ago. I played with both the Nook & the Kindle first. Some folks prefer the E-ink screen, but I've spent so much reading on my laptop and the backlit Nook screen is such an improvement over it, that I don't have any right to complain.

I almost went with a full blown 10" droid tablet, but I think the Nook does about 95% of what I'd use a tablet for at 50% of the price. The advantage of the Nook over the Kindle for me is that I spend a lot of time reading blogs (and wasting time reading message boards 😉 ) so the ability to use the internet on it was vital to my decision.

I'm actually typing this on my rooted nook color running CM7 (which turns it into a full blown android 2.3 tablet). You'll definitely want to check out the XDA discussion boards on the nook here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=860
click on "android development" for guides to rooting.

You have alot of options with the nook. If you read alot of books, you may want to go the ManualNooter route, which keeps the stock Nook UI in tact and unlocks root access so you can switch between the stock UI and a standard Android UI. I did this on my wife's nook, she loves it. I went the CM7 route on mine, I don't read alot of books, but use it more for surfing and reading discussion boards. I can still read books using the nook app or even the kindle app (kind of funny running kindle on barnes and noble hardware)

Anyway, have fun playing with it. Its a great little device. i just picked mine up refurbished for 169. Email me if you need any help.
By the way, the bootloader on the nook will basically boot anything you throw at it, so its virtually impossible to "brick" the device. There is a huge community of people over at XDA that have put alot of time into development on it, so if you have problems, there are alot of resources over there.

Ditto that.

I've been running MIUI for the last few weeks on my NC, but it's too iPhoney. I prefer the standard Android interface to any of the iDevices and MIUI tries really hard to mimic them.

Phiremod is a really good one, but he hasn't put out an update for a very long time (which is why I tried out the MIUI ROM). I'll probably end up back at CM7.
