I am a well, not sure. i have been called a Survey Tech, a Geomatics Tech, a Mapping Tech. I have 20 years experience in the Surveying Field. I currently work for a County Government. I am very adept and Civil3d. I have been using cad since version 14 with Softdesk 8. I also am proficient in Star-Net. (Surveyors, you should be using this program)

I am trying to find some pick up work on the side, with the long term goal of working at home if it is possible. I was doing some searches, but I keep getting trapped in the Monster.com sites. Is anyone aware of any trade sites that may have a need for my skill set? I have experience in all types of surveys, r/w mapping, platting, FEMA certs etc. I also have a lot of experiences creating DTM's for topographic surveys. I am not looking for a full-time job. i would like to test the waters with working from home, and if there is a demand and I can build clientele, my long term goal is to work from my home office.

Hi Greg,
Have you tried contacting a bunch of local surveyors? It seem like that might be a good start. Some Professional Surveyors may be expert and boundary matters but not the drafting end of it. I would definitely work up some sample plats to show what you could do. Just some thoughts on the matter. I don't know where you would go to get your word out on a larger scale. It seems like a lot of web sites like Monster.com don't really have categories for the Survey Profession and want to categorize us as engineer techs.

Thanks for your reply. I was just curious if there was a hub like say Freelancer.com for surveyors that need help. I know quite a few of the local surveyors but they mostly work for bigger firms. I would have no problem getting a job with those firms but I am looking for the guy that is a little behind or needs help with a project rather than working for a firm. I am currently employed, just looking for some weekend and week night work.

There's a place called Surveyorconnect. Ever hear of that?

I've been looking for someone that can have their boots on the ground some days and can generate indoor billable time on others.

Do you own your own copies of C3d and StarNet?

Also what version, and do you pay maintenance?

What does a license of Civil3d cost and yearly fees?

Now that you mentioned it I hate to think about it. Hard to believe it has cost me $12400 for Microstation w/InRoads plus $1800 maintenance per year. Also own Carlson TakeOff at $9000, Carlson Civil Suite $2500, Pix4d at $8700, Magnet Office Tools $2500, [REDACTED] w/ Lidar $1000 etc....

I'm definitely not buying Civil3d. Don't even show it to me.

Do you have a copy of LDD2006, and if so would you be interested in drawing 300-600 vacant lot "plot plan surveys"? I'll provide our standard template. All of the lots would be in one subdivision. If this is something you would be interested in email me. (address on profile page).

I'm sure Greg can do that drafting for $1 per lot and have it done before Thanksgiving.

Actually it's $7-10/lot with liberal time constraints. 😎 Half the lots can be duplicated so it ain't a mensa project.

Greg,

Check out the upwork website. I never used it myself but I did browse and it seems like you could find some survey or civil drafting opportunities.

Gregg

I found my disc with LDD 2005. Let me see if I can install it. Its been a decade since I have used this. Of course I have some questions, I am not sure what your local requirements are for lot size. I'll need that, along with the building envelope size, set back requirements, wetland buffers if any, easements on the site. Is the site in or near a flood plain? Is there a conceptual layout?

The plat with coordinates will be provided in .dwg and all other information is included. Our VP can furnish you everything you need. A verbal conversation with her will answer all of your questions.

When I ran my own company I used free lancers exclusively for my drafting needs due to the fact that I did not have the office space for staff and the people that I did use I had known from their having drafted my work in a few other companies I worked for in the past so I knew their abilities and attention to detail.
I would suggest that you reach out to small local companies to see if you can be of service to them.
When I started the Survey department for the firm I am with now we outsourced Survey drafting and ran into issues with increasing volume, them running older versions of ACAD and not sticking to our drafting standards. That forced us to hire 3 drafters to retain in house control and reduce turn around time with revisions and the like.
Any company running 2 or more crews would likely prefer somebody full time and in house as a means of controlling the work flow and QA/QC.
Before plunging into this venture I would also speak with your employer as the County might have rules in place governing "moon lighting".
Good luck with your venture, let us know how you make out but approach the smaller locals first would be my suggestion.

I see you're looking for a website. But to follow up with my suggestion/tangent, you might join or go to your local chapter of your State Professional Land Surveyors. You probably don't have to be a PLS to come to their meetings, and/or they may have an "associate" member level for non-licensed surveyors. It would be a good way to socialize with other surveyors and get to know some of the small operations that might need help with drafting and other services.
