my Brother MFC6490cw printer has died... it served me well.
Looking for something similar:
11x17 with scanner, printer, document feeder, wifi
thanks!

how long you had yours? do you do a lot of scanning? (I do)
I have not found Linux support for it yet, maybe a deal killer for me
I also have the Brother MFC-J6710DW and bought it due to the high recommendations on this board. I've had it about a year and no problems other the one I caused by using off-brand ink. The scanner works great and I have it networked to two machines. It was simple to set it up on the network. No complaints.

😉 My accountant says I can't write-off more that my annual gross income, so that puts me at a $200 budget

Printer Recomendation: Brother!!!
OK, it is under warranty (2 years) so I gave that a shot...
It was not registered, so I registered it on line first.
I hate the phone so I first used the Chat feature on the website (twice) but ended up on the phone when the chat person told me that I had to finish on the phone.
I spent nearly 20 minutes repeating that it is plugged in etc... I remained polite.;-)
Bottom line: a Refurbished MFC-J6710DW with 3 year warranty will be shipped within 3 to 5 business days, no charge, and I do not need to return the dead machine!
the ink cartridges are not the same, but they offered to replace any unopened Brother ink for the old machine at no charge!
yada yada about properly disposing of the dead machine, but I am cool with that!

Printer Recomendation: Brother!!!
I still have the 6490 we bought 4 years ago, just bought (this season) 2 of the 6710. Very happy with Brother, reason I got these is the quality of the printer I had on another job, only reason we aren't still using it, is because it was destroyed in a fire!

My 6510DW works great. I use knock off ink that is next to free, and so far no problems at all. Both printer and ink were suggestions from you guys.
I'm waiting for the inexpensive ink to disappear off the paper or start a fire, but so far, all is well.
Is the scanner networkable on the brother?
Thanks,
Larry
I use my MFC-6490CW is scan thru my wired network. I do have the Brother Control Center software installed on the computers that I use.
Hope this helps
Ron
Not up on the network thing, but the Brother is wireless; the printer, scanner, everything. Seems to me I recall reading about a network setup when I first got it.
I've used Brother laser and inkjet printers and MFC's for almost 17 years now and have not been disappointed yet.
Just replaced a wireless HP6500 with a Brother MFC-J4510W and I am very happy.
Much faster, quieter and it prints tabloid with the same footprint as the HP, which did not.
Factory ink dries sooner than HP and does not seem to run when wet, like HP ink.
IMHO.

Yes. It has Wifi, USB and Ethernet ports. Wifi is very simple to setup.
With Linux I can use either Wifi or USB to print, but I have to use USB to scan. I believe I can also scan with Wifi (in Linux) but never bothered to try it.
I use the document feeder for scanning with no problems.
There are several Linux packages available for scanning to all the image formats and also PDF.
It comes with Windows and Mac software CDs with a full suite of tools... I seldom use Windows so I don't recall if there were any issues or limitations with that software.
Thanks! I just ordered one, too. It will make for more legible plots of the reduced record maps. But the real reason I need it, is to scan the job log books of 4 different survey companies that are on old Tax Assessor Maps from 1955, 1965, 1979 and 1981 respectfully. Daughter is coming home for 6 week break from college and this will give her another job to do at the company and make some money for her bills.
Although, most of the job numbers have been put in a database, I always like to check the old books in case the job was mis-refrenced. It also gives me an indication of how the parcels have been reconfigured at different times and gives me an idea on when changes occurred and what historical survey archives I may need to access to search for the original surveyor.
It is scheduled to be here Monday and I still can’t believe it is $220 after taxes.
I got a basic Brother brand laser printer last year and it works very well.
The problem is that they designed in early termination on the toner cartridges. It starts telling you it's low long before it runs out. If you put black tape over the sensor, it quits doing that, but eventually you run into a mechanical counter wheel triggering a shutoff. I took out two screws from the toner cartridge, rotated the wheel, reassembled, and I think I've printed about two reams more. It now it may be getting so it isn't as dark as with a new cartridge, but still uniform and readable long past where they wanted to sell me a new one.
I feel like I've been cheated by their design.
My Hp CM2320 is the same way. Probably an industry trend.
