@dave-lindell?ÿ

Sorry to tell you this, but the USPS isn't delivering it for that little.?ÿ It's subsidized.?ÿ Without the subsidy, it'd be a lot more.

And for the one or two times each year that I might need something mailed across the country, I'd be happy to pay the $10-20, if I'm not paying into the PO.

The US gov't doesn't need to be involved in package delivery any more.?ÿ We don't have large expanses of nothing with hostile indians or bandits to worry so much about these days.?ÿ And somehow other private companies manage to delivery packages too

I suspect I live in as remote of place as you can get in the contemporaneous USA. It is a 72 mile drive to the post office, which is in another state, and I have only been to 'my' post office twice in 30 years. The last time I stopped in, it was just to meet the new postmistress and say hello.

I actually have four addresses: one for the USPS, one for UPS (although the USPS address will work for them because the local drivers know everybody), a third for FedEx and a fourth that works in Google Maps. USPS and UPS always work. FedEx is dicey, although they have been getting better. Each address is in a different town or ZIP code. You need to be careful with the Google Maps address you will end up 35 miles away in Dutch John Utah. I think the County GIS did this for a joke.

My mail is delivered twice per week, on Monday and Thursday between 2:25 and 2:40 pm to my mailbox 3/4 mile down the road. If there is more than 3 or 4 feet of snow on the Colorado highway, the carrier will usually text me to let me know they will come the following day.

They condemned my mailbox about five years ago (which was totally reasonable) and I replaced it with a much nicer and bigger mailbox. My old address was nixied (what ever that is) and I had to change my address from 10 to 11. All this was no big deal, needed to be done and I am not complaining.

I am positive that you you sent a letter with my first initial and last name, to any address in my Colorado zip code, if it makes it to the post office it will be delivered to me, just as if it had the correct address on it.

So for the record, in my neighborhood the USPS is absolutely amazing. To my knowledge nothing is ever lost and everything just works. They too do the last 70 mile deliveries for UPS ground and they say it pays for the route.

And for the record, the power company is equally amazing, if not even better.

I would have thought the just-in-time supply side breakdown would have been a neat little come to Jesus moment for those looking to outsource.?ÿ

?ÿ

edit:?ÿ Meaning to say, if it had been working for two hundred years, and, at least here, it still performs well,

?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ why is it you need to replace it ?

?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ If it really were an anachronism, and competition outstripped it's viability, it would have ceased decades past.

?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ My use of the private carriers have been at par or worse, and I don't believe any of them are obliged to fund their pension

?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ liabilities out to seventy five years.?ÿ They still worked when the supply chain was crumbling.

@jitterboogie

I live in the eastern part of Daggett County Utah. We have a population slightly less than 600. All the mucky-ups live over in Manila Utah (about 200). There are 80 people in Dutch John, which is where my physical address is. But it is a 35 mile drive. And there is nothing there except for tourism type (fly fishing and hunting) outfits. There is a little gas station shop with groceries, but a can of soup is $5. I never stop there because they have too much drama and I don't want it rubbing off on me. When it warms up a bit, Dutch John will fill up with drunk fly fisher-people who specialize in being in my way.

There are 4 people down here in Browns Park, and I think there are 4 Dominion Energy people up North in Clay Basin where all the natural gas for Utah and Colorado is stored underground.?ÿ

I have no idea where the other 300 people are at. They may be summer home people who moved their voting records to Daggett a couple of decades ago to run off a sheriff (or some such thing.)

If you put your boat on the Green River at Flaming Gorge dam, I am the first house on the right. (Probably 15 miles.)?ÿ

I am always asking myself "why would anyone want to live here anyway?" They 'only' deliver the mail twice a week!

@mark-silver?ÿ

So you are maybe five miles from Colorado as the crow flies and less than ten miles to Wyoming if the crow flies north.?ÿ How far is it to a city over 2000 population in each of the three states?

@mark-silver?ÿ

Funny.

I actually know exactly where you are talking about.

That's truly an awesome place, Minus the drunkard fly-fishers and line blockers.

?ÿ

I'm planning a canoe on the flaming gorge trip sometime.?ÿ I'll look you up and wave if you're working and not get in your way

@jitterboogie Those Walmarts are the closest 2000 person places.?ÿ?ÿ

Maybell has 41 people, Vernal 10,600, Rock Springs 23,300 and Craig 9,000. These might not be fair, because the Vernal population would not include the rest of the Uintah Basin. And the twin cities of Rock Springs and Green River perhaps should be counted as one.

7 miles to WY and 7 miles to CO. Let me know when you are out here and we will hit the River. I don't know much about the reservoir fishing, but I don't think a canoe will get you far up there. I might know something about fishing the river, especially the C section and we can make a float of it.?ÿ
