Anyone have any suggestions? I've had and liked Danner Pronghorns, but I think they're overpriced. My current wore out boots are Wolverine, and I'm not crazy about them, they haven't lasted very long. I've got champaign taste and MD20-20 budget, hoping for something in between. TIA, JT

For anything above 25 f with little snow and mud I prefer north face pilot hikers. Not sure why the name. If I am a pilot and I'm hiking something has gone wrong.
Anyway they are light, durable and waterproof. Soles grip up and down hill well. My last pair was under $100 and lasted nearly 5 years.
Check out the 'Georgia Boot Company'. I bought a pair of their Romeo work shoes from them and I've been really happy. They've really held up. Their selection of work boots is extensive.
Lowa or Asolo for me. You pay a little bit more but they are one piece leather, your feet stay dry and you'll get several years out of a pair. I normally wear the soles out before the uppers wear out.
Zamberlan 996 vioz GT hiking boots are my go to boots. Uppers have lasted 5 years with sole replaced after 4 years!
Vasque have been the best boots I've had. Great construction and lightweight. They are more comfortable than sneakers.

My company provides us with boots once a year from Redwing. I have Redwing 4420s, they are a logger style boot. I actually have 2 pairs of them, one really old pair for nasty jobs. I find the newer ones to be really comfortable right out of the box. They run about $220ish and resoling them should be less than $100. My old pair I've had for almost 4 years. I have to wear a certain style of boot for the work I do, so these might not fit your needs. I had a pair of Carolina's before my most recent Redwing's, they were less expensive and were comfortable from the start also.

Well that leaves out what I am going to recommend, but here goes, White's Hunters, my current pair is about shot, BUT they have been serving me well since 1990 with a couple intervening rebuilds, spread out over 25 years they are actually very economical, BUT you are probably looking at $400+ for a new pair. White's are definitely NOT a waterproof boot, no GoreTex or other linings, BUT nothing quite like a handmade boot that fits your foot.

Viewing the Danner website I'm seeing a price of around nzd$320 for a pair of pronghorns
That seems pretty good to me
I'd happily pay that for a pair of boots that is a: really comfortable and b: lasts a couple of years
Currently I'm running around in a pair of 2 year old Meindl Army Pro's (around nzd$500) and will probably replace them with the same again
I've become a big fan of Asolo. They are expensive, but it is the most comfortable boot I've ever worn. The guy who works with me bought a pair and has given up wearing sneakers. He just wears the Asolo boots all the time now.
I appreciate all the help. I found a pair of Danner High Ground 400g boots on sale at Cabela's for $136 that looked a lot like the Pronghorns, so I got a pair of them to try. Fits my budget a little better.
I've started buying slightly used boots on eBay, and have been able to try boots otherwise out of my price range. I was pretty happy with the redwings I just wore out after probably over a year of 50+ hour weeks, but even happier with the used pair I just bought to replace them. Paid $80 for a $3-400 pair of nicely broke-in and expect to get a year out of them.
Both times I bought two pairs because I was bidding on several pairs simultaneously. This was fortunate because the second pairs weren't as comfortable. Even still I paid less than buying new, and ended up with an extra pair for backup.
Before buying used, I mostly bought Georgia logger style boots off their website where you can get a 20% discount.
I like Redwing 899s but they aren't cheap. I wear 14B so I can't get cheap boots, anyway. The 90+ year old shoe store owner said drily, "I've bought cars for less than that."
The Redwing 899 is a store only model and the closest store is over an hour away.....
I grew up wearing hand me downs inside the family and I hated it so much was getting in trouble at school for not wearing shoes.
Then I began wearing the original Trac Shoe with the three racin stripes on the side until they were banned for use in America.
Wearing second had shoes can be really uncomfortable and not so good for your foot is the wear pattern is so much different than your own.
I wish Merrill Encore Pro Grip came in a work boot, they are soo comfortable.

I reckon I am one of the luck ones that don't require high dollar boots, for 50+ years of surveying all I have ever worn is the cheaper boots and have gotten several years out of them. I told someone the other day that the Herman Survivors that I have now feel so good that it makes me feel important when I have them on.
