Slightly off-topic, but in the early 90's while travelling in Africa I met a fellow recent engineering graduate from England and we discussed the similarities of odd-ball students between my NZ and her UK experience. She won out though with a story of a chap in her first year class that decided he was going to attend and fully participate in every party that he could physically get to, but to fund it he needed to cut back on food expenses, so his ingenious plan was to mash up weetbix and milk and make trays of biscuits that he could eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The net result, so she said, was that he became one of the very few people in recent years to get scurvy in England.
I can remember some hard times when a good meal was a few days away.?ÿ But it was always due to poor pay and irresponsible money management...not by choice like the chap you mentioned!
I do remember scraping together enough pennies to sit at a local restaurant with a cup of coffee.?ÿ When nobody was looking I would fill my pockets up with little packets of ketchup, little coffee creamers and prepackaged saltine crackers from the condiment table.?ÿ Once back home I could make the finest homemade "tomato soup" that money couldn't buy...with all the crackers I wanted.
btw - I had to Google "Weet-Bix"...and it doesn't appear too appetizing.?ÿ In this hemisphere we would call that stuff either "Shredded Wheat" or "Grape-Nuts".?ÿ Neither of which tastes any better than a handful of dried grass. ??ÿ

Had an employee the was late quite a bit. Never just a few minutes. Usually, an hour or more and this would put me in a predicament as I would have to call the client and tell them we would be late. I had a backup guy that was a friend of another employee. He was unemployed and would be there as within minutes of calling him in because the other guy didn't show up. After a few times of this, I fired the constantly tardy employee and hired the reliable backup full time.
I'll never forget the look on the tardy guy's face when he showed up at 11:30 am (supposed to be at work at 8:00 am) and I told him he didn't have a job anymore. He wasn't surprised or anything. He was disappointed in himself. He told me he was sorry and he understood. I paid him what I owed him for the week and that was that. I heard rumors,?ÿlater on, the reason he was late so much was that he sold weed on the side and was up all hours of the night selling it. He no longer sells weed and has a good job in a different field.
I've been tardy a few times myself. One time my boss was coming by at 3:30 am to pick me up to go to work. We worked away a week at a time on a dam and road project. I woke up to him knocking on my bedroom window. Apparently, showed up at my house and knocked on the door but I didn't answer. He then drove back to the office (about 5 minutes away) called me several times and I didn't answer the phone. So he drove back to my house and started knocking on windows until he found the one to my bedroom, which woke me up.
I was also late one time because my wife ran over our dog. She was taking the kids to school and I was right out the door behind her. She hopped in her car and took off. The dog was sleeping under the driver side rear tire. Nobody noticed it was there and why it didn't wake up when the car started or the kids got in the car, I don't know. But she pulled out and ran right over it and had no clue she did it. She sped off and I waited there until she got back to break the bad news to her. She said she remembered feeling a bump when she pulled out but didn't think anything of it.

We had Shredded Wheat too, but not Grape-Nuts (that sounds like something that should be referred to the Doc). In my junior growing years my stock breakfast was 10 Weet-Bix softened in a pint of milk. After uni I discovered what is now my go to all time favorite meal to make:
That's boil some vegetables, drain, mix in a whole (skin removed) shredded precooked chicken, mix in some chicken stock and some green Thai curry paste, simmer a bit, mix in some whole milk, bring up to temp but no boil. Works with fish too.
"Sorry I was late. Sap ran great last night.?ÿMy tank was full and had to pump out before it overflowed."?ÿ It is that time of year after all.
Speaking of sap running, what became of @perry-williams ??ÿ He's probably busy with his maples right now, but it's been a long time since I noticed a post from him.
I've been using a CPAP for several years, and for the most part it's been a Godsend. However, it is entirely possible to pull a pillow (or two) over your head and block off the alarm and the morning light. I've done it more than once and slept right through the alarm.
