Not sure this is what you are looking for, but the first thing that came to mind from your question above "What technology updates ... have had an impact on your surveying practice", my first response is that the folks who have spent their entire career using GPS rarely understand the principles and mechanics of "Land Surveying" and what it truly entails. The folks coming to my firm in response to an ad for a 'Party Chief" over the past few years are really not what I would consider a true "Party Chief" but rather an Instrument Man. If you can hand them a Field calc package for the initial boundary work with all record boundary corners drawn out with search coordinates and they can find a few monuments to calibrate to, the jobs typically go pretty smoothly. If they have to go suss them out without a calc package, for the most part they cannot find them and don't understand the visible clues in the field- lines of possession, etc. I am seeing this getting worse as time goes by.
