The state benefits probably well compensate for the low'ish salary.

I must be out of touch a bit. 60k plus bennies seems like a decent starting salary for a newbie. Is Wyoming cost of living high or something?

Didn't say he was, never met the fellow. The bottom (newbie end) of the salary range is 60k. It's a State job which usually means great benefits. I know several experienced Surveyors pulling much less. I never pictured Wyoming as a high cost of living State.

I don't suppose it is, but it is an oil and gas producer, and where there is oil and gas surveyors are in demand. Where surveyors are in demand, $60k is a little on the light side.

I just retired yesterday from this position, after 11 years with the agency. The benefits are very good. Cost of living in Wyoming varies, This position is based in Cheyenne, the cost of living is very reasonable.
This position is very Wyoming water right intensive, I had the benefit of working at the Wyoming State Engineers office for about 15 years.:-)

Congratulations on your retirement, Doug!

I have lived in Cheyenne now for 20 years. There are pro's and con's in living in any city.

I find Cheyenne is hard to beat if you, enjoy the outdoors, want to raise your children in a nice friendly city with quality education opportunities. The people around here and in Wyoming are just hard to beat. I think it's because once here and been here through the winter we share a commonality that we survived "a winter". Both my children received a quality education at the University of Wyoming for dirt cheap tuition. You can find a decent home for 185K. If you desire the cultural aspects of life, Denver is not far away. If you get cabin fever in a rough winter, Denver International Airport is 1 hr. 20 min. away and Cancun is only 2+ hours from there. You can enjoy the benefits of the big city and be back in Cheyenne in no time. There is a well kept secret about the mountain bike trails west of Cheyenne in the Medicine Bow National Forest that are world class. Professional riders from all over the world come here to experience the trails. Word has it that the Wyoming Department of Fish and Game is one of the better State outfits to work for. God's country is where Glenn Borkenhagen and Mighty Moe live and not that far away...they do treat visitors well there too!!

Don't get me wrong, I like Wyoming. Have worked there 3 times in the last 45 years. Gillette, Wamsutter and Rock Springs (Not too far from Loyal) I even finished the 6th grade in Gillette. My Dad worked for a land surveyor named Como(sp?) there in 1965.

But compared to where I currently live, Wyoming is an expensive place to live. And a young surveyor can expect wages in the near 60k range there. I paid 64.5K for my house in 2004. Currently it is worth near 80K. For 185K(per Pablo) I could buy 3-4K square feet of house on about an acre in the City. Get that with 5 acres out of town.

B-)
