Hello all! My name is Tim and I am a corporal in the usmc. I might be getting out of the marine corps here soon and I'm looking at transferring my skill set to the civilian sector. I am an Artillery land surveyor which means my job is to put every artillery firing unit on a common grid, my grid. I do this by using Trimble GPS receiver and rivers and also old school manual survey using the wild t-2e. My wife and I are expecting a little one in January and are wanting to raise him/her (find out Sept 8) either in the Dallas area, the Denver area or south Florida/California area. I'm wanting to work on a survey crew and also continue my education by using my Montgomery gi bill to get my stte surveying licensees. If any one can help a marine out I would appreciate it greatly, thank you.

Check indeed.com for surveying jobs. Several are usually listed in the Dallas area. Good luck. Congrats on the new addition to the family and Thank You for serving and protecting our country.

Thank you sir! We are really excited for the addition. I will check on indeed. I actually have a reenlisment package in right now but just got told that I am allergic to a chemical called potassium dichromate which is found in our boots so that's why I might be getting out

potassium dichormate

I don't know about allergic reactions to it but it sounds like nasty stuff after reading the above. In the "Uses" section it mentions about leather tanning so I guess that's where the boot connection comes in.

The very last sentence got my attention and it is VERY relevant to you now:
Human exposure further encompasses impaired fertility, heritable genetic damage and harm to unborn children.

Carry on Corporal and congrats and best wishes in your endeavors.
E.

Yea that's where the connection is, in the leather. It sucks because I was was wanting to make a career out of the marine corps but hey some times that's the way the cookie crumbles right. I find out if I get to stay in or not on September 8th at 0800

You have found the right place to ask questions

That alone says you are a wise young person worthy of getting a start with a quality land surveying firm. Congratulations.

Every location you have mentioned is somewhere that I have no desire to be, so there will be no competition from me. Unfortunately for you, that also means I have no direct help for you today. But, there are dozens (hundreds) of others that frequent this board who will be able to help you once they discover your post. Please note that it will be incredibly slow on here until about Tuesday afternoon. So, feel free to do a second post about then if you have not had enough feedback. A very large percentage of our participants disappear outside of standard working hours.

Thank you for your service to our country.

Thank you for you input, those locations that I have said are just our desired locations but if it all comes down to it and the marine corps gives me the boot I'll go where ever I can get the best offer ya know

Thank you for your service.

I was an Army Field Artillery Surveyor. I took my VEAP benefits to California State University at Fresno. Then it was called Surveying Engineering but now they call it Geomatics Engineering.

I am sure they would be glad to send you info on the program. Just google "Geomatics Fresno". I suggest giving consideration to using those benefits. I think out of state tuition is waved for Vets at CSU's.

I have made a decent living in this profession and I like what I do.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for your input, I'm guessing you were fortunate enough to be stationed in fort sill Oklahoma(sarcasm) I hated that place so much. I am definitely going to reap the bennifits of the Montgomery gi bill in whichever state I get hired in

Man, I am so glad that you included this site in your search. I have worked with some former artillery surveyors. They are some of the best I have known. Good luck. I am sure things will be good for your young new family.

Thank you sir.

If you are looking in the Denver area or Atlanta area try Merrick & Company at www.merrick.com. They are looking for crew chiefs and the pay is good along with the benefits.

A word to the wise

Focus on communication skills. Many of us who own surveying firms are perfectionists. When we see errors of one kind, we assume there may be errors of another kind. Errors that are not caught and corrected can cause problems in a wide variety of ways. Some will get through no matter how carefully we work to eliminate them.

Yes believe me I know about the errors, in my line it could mean many dead terrorists or many innocent women and children killed. So I know to tripple check my computations.

I don't know for sure what the Cow was speaking of, but check some other elements of your posts for possible simple errors that could work against you In a resume or other written type of communication.

Thanks for being there when we all needed you,

Don

Us know, it is what it is. It was probably about a couple post ago but I'm not to worried about it. There was a lot of autocorrect mistakes from my phone.

"tripple" is a clue. Little things can be very important.
