Been trying out my new Hults Bruk hatchet out doing field work. Hardened blade, really holds an edge and replaces carrying a hammer and machete in my vest. Kissed the back of my finger with it today, fortunately no stitches were required. I must say the view where I ended my traverse today was a little puckering. It's for a 600' aerial cable spanning this gorge. Monday I come in from the other side.

Kansas it is not. Resident that lives nearby advised me the trail that runs along the rim of this canyon where I snapped the photo, is a brown bear highway. I felt comfortable enough that my singing was enough to repulse even the most ornery of ursine but how the smell of blood would factor in, remained an unknown.?ÿ ?????ÿ
Never seen the plant anti-coagulent method before. That's clever as hell in a very remote situation like that.
Read it online, once, and in a book that soldiers would use some plant (can't remember the name) to clot the blood. ?ÿ
@rj-schneider WWI literally tons and tons of that sphagnum moss was harvested and used on the battle fields of Europe for exactly this purpose. Being that it is acidic, it's also antimicrobial. Also makes for one heck of a great alternative to TP.
I knew I'd get that wrong, it is an anti-hemorrhagic, not an anti-coagulant.?ÿ Yarrow was the plant I couldn't remember.?ÿ
I'm very familiar with yarrow and it's a very useful plant for treating wounds. It grows in abundance in well drained disturbed soil around here. This is the reddest one I've ever seen. Usually they bloom white to pink. Won't find them in the forest though.

That's good to know about sphagnum moss.?ÿ I've used Prunella vulgaris?ÿor Roman heal-all/self-heal.?ÿ The whole plant is edible.?ÿ I believe it works best as a poultice when dried.

Great photo! That looks like quite the tumble with one wrong step. Had a similar experience (non-surveying) in North Carolina once. Was staying in a house at the top of a hill. Van we rented wouldn't make it up the drive and our driver (not me) just about lost one of the front tires down a hill similar to the one shown trying to back down the drive to a flat spot to park.
Be careful out there.

Moss, to stanch the blood flow. My first aid kit was in the truck. We adapt, overcome and carry on.
