We are hiring 3 positions.?ÿ Two Transportation Surveyors, Range C or D (LSIT or LS required respectively) to work on a field crew under the supervision of a Party Chief.?ÿ Requires being on the the Eligibility List or lateral transfer eligibility or reinstatement rights.?ÿ We work in the field about 50% of the time (usually 4 days of travel).?ÿ State pays lodging and meal reimbursement when on travel status.?ÿ We also get assigned to emergency incident investigations up to several times of the year, this can mean multiple weeks away from home with little warning but typically we can get what they need within a few days.
The best part of this job is there is a lot of variety, boundary, forest boundary, terrestrial Lidar scanning, topography for fire stations and air attack bases, never a dull moment.?ÿ It's a lot like working for a small time LS firm with the advantage of the stability of the government.?ÿ And this is the Fire Department which everyone loves Fire people.?ÿ We have to turn down free meals (not allowed to accept gifts).
The 3rd position is a 2 year limited term office LS or LSIT to assist management with all sorts of Surveying type tasks such as research and helping with mapping.

I'd love to work in the field with you for a day, but I'd probably jeopardize my job and piss off my boss if I spent much more than that.
From what I've heard it would be a cool experience working in some very nice areas of California!?ÿ If any of you are interested, contact Dave and he'll tell you what you would need to know.
do we get to wear those cool yellow Nomex shirts???ÿ
Is it really uphill more than half the time??ÿ This flatlander would not be able to keep up, even for a single day.
The department issues pants, jacket, helmet, shroud, goggles, gloves, web gear (backpack thing with water bladder and fire shelter) in a red go bag. You provide boots. Mostly I use the pants and jacket to keep all the black stuff off of my clothes. By the time we get there typically the fire is miles away or out.

Well, logically, you usually go slower up the hill than down.?ÿ If it is the same distance both ways, then of course it is uphill more than half the time.
man, that's right up my alley in so many ways.?ÿ except for one... high school sophomore who would likely break right in two if i uprooted her from the one house she's always known and all the friends she's ever had.
thanks, dave- now i'm gonna find myself daydreaming way too much about weekend trail runs in the sierras and bike trips in downieville...
I'm in the beginning of my 20th year working for the State of California (6 years at a local City and 10 years at a Private Firm before that).
I started my first State job at the Department of Parks and Recreation in mid-December 2000.?ÿ My first desk was literally the leftover gap in the cubicles.?ÿ They brought the standard cubicles from the east and another set from the west and my desk was the leftover gap in between them.?ÿ Sort of like having Junior Rights.?ÿ I had 6 or 7 feet of width.
We left that office for Class A office space at One Capitol Mall after a couple of months.?ÿ I transferred here (Cal Fire) in March 2009.
I transferred here (Cal Fire) in March 2009.
I would have guessed more like 3 years at CalFire.?ÿ How time flies!?ÿ And you're a lot more stable than I thought -- I had you Karoly boys down a inveterate job-switchers.?ÿ Your brother Michael sure seems to be one; I've lost track of the number of outfits he's been with.
Sounds like it would be a great job! Beautiful Country, I can't imagine how great it must be to live in that part of our Country.?ÿ

Working with Dave and a lot of the scenery would be great.
The fires and mudslides not so much.?ÿ Laws out there a lot more restrictive and bureacratic than you and I are used to. The price of his house would buy maybe 3 similar ones here.
Think I'll stay here.
I follow a Facebook page called "For the Love of Old Houses" because I like old houses. I have an old house; I can't stand when people gut them and make them all brand new inside, no character. I see these places on big lots in some of the midwest towns, amazing, beautiful woodwork, big house, grand staircase, just beautiful, especially the ones that haven't been "HGTVed" (walls taken out, everything gray and white or bright white, overdone kitchen, all woodwork painted). The prices are very tempting, I could retire in a cheap family home. Not sure about the weather, though. And my retirement health care options are much better in California.
