I suppose that you could have handed him the RTK pole and can of paint and said "lets take a walk". The both of you likely would have gained some knowledge along the way.

Before getting licensed I helped a few good people out over the years doing something similar and in one instance found myself sucked into a dispute I wasn't unaware of until it was too late. Proceed with all due caution. I'd say if your just helping the gentleman lay out a fence and you know it's not anywhere near an adjoining boundary, no big deal.

One of my first business partners used to say "Never do anybody a favor." I initially thought "Man, this guy is really harsh." Then I did someone a favor, and of course, it bit me. A few years later I did someone else a favor, and of course, got bit again. At the risk of appearing stupid I will confess to a third favor, and guess what? That's right, I never do favors for anyone and I tell the guys I am mentoring about once a month to "NEVER do anybody a favor!"

I think your farmer friend is secretly a surveyor. Who else would paint a one foot diameter circle?
