Apparently, there is no data sheet for the Four Corners monument out west. In fact, there's only one NGS mark within 5 miles of the monument.
?ÿ
To this Easterner, anyway, that's surprising.
Sounds like a good project that needs to be done.?ÿ

I imagine there might be some information available from the Dept. of Interior or the Navajo Nation for the monument. Many non-NGS entities have not provided their data to the NGS.
As for the suggestion that the site be surveyed for submission to the NGS, the site is on Navajo Nation land. I wonder if they might agree to work with such a project??ÿ

I remember stopping after a too long day's drive at a small motel near Teec Nos Pos, AZ on the way to Telluride, CO.?ÿ Beautiful clear dark skies at night; wonderful desert mesa lands in the morning.?ÿ
As for geodetic control in the area, you are right. There is a large void around the monument. In the surrounding areas there are a lot old benchmarks. The "cross hairs" are centered on the four corners.?ÿ
?ÿ
MathTeacher; You need to call NGS and find out why its not in the data base(anymore)?
In the early 2000 I printed it off the NGS web site because I went there. I think the PID was
AD9256. You can do a RADIAL search using N36 59 56 (N36 59 56.3316) and W109 02 43 (W109 02 42.6804) and see that within 10 miles there are about 10 monuments (I did not count the list so don't hold me to that exact number). Do a search for GO0510 (that would be G oh zero five one zero ) that monument is 0.1 mile east of Four Corners Monument.
Let us know what NGS says about this monument NOT being in the Data Base anymore.

If you go through the PID lookup procedure and check "Include Destroyed Marks" it comes up,
AD9256 STATION RECOVERY (2010) AD9256 AD9256'RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 2010 (WAS) AD9256'THIS MARK IS DESTROYED.
That didn't stop a couple people from reporting it as Good later on.
Didn't they rebuild a fancier monument in place of an older one??ÿ That probably accounts for the destroyed status, and nobody did the work to get a replacement data sheet on the new one, which might be positioned a trifle different.
@bill93?ÿ
Thanks, Bill. It's on the OPUS site, PID BBCD57 is the current designation. According to the Shared Solution, its position is only slightly different from AD9256.

Fascinating how things get done!
@bill93?ÿ
The disk was removed then replaced. I hate when folks do that. The monument was observed during the 1999 Utah FBN campaign. Good accuracies were obtained.?ÿ
They rebuilt the site with a massive upgrade from my 1993 visit on the way to the grand canyon.
I'll post the photos from my 2016 visit, and I can bounce over next time up in the other house I live up in Farmington.
I have a contact with NMDOT that might be able to hook me up too.
?ÿ
Some other photos exist, but had a rather unpleasant person I dont want to look at ever again in them....
So hugely upgraded, remeasured, and all of the dirt floor stalls are now concrete and granite etc.
Let me know what you need, I'll be within spitting distance every other week. Shiprock is a bonus photo for y'all.
When they upgraded the monument, they hired a surveyor from Cortez to keep it in the same position in 2010. A few months before the upgrade, a utah reporter managed to download the NGS data sheet and notice that the lat long was not exactly 35 and 103 and wrote in the Deseret News "National Geodetic Survey Changes the Four Corners State Boundary Lines!!"
Should be 37 and 109
Actually as I recall, the headline was "National Geodetic Survey Announces Four Corners Monument in Wrong Place!,
We drove past the monument about a month ago.?ÿ The Tribes have the site closed off due to Covid, even though the entirety of the site is outdoors (as far as I know).?ÿ I never even considered that possibility when we set up our trip.
Bummer. I was planning a trip out that way for early May, but rental car shortage, airline uncertainty, and mashed up Covid rules dictated against it.
?ÿ
Yeah, I forgot about the lockdown, thanks for reminding me before I drove out.
I'll be there when it opens up again for more photos to share with anyone who is interested.
@jitterboogie?ÿ Nice pictures, keep them coming. When the place opens again (soon I hope) I must get there for another visit.
MathTeacher;?ÿ When you did your search for monuments around Four Corners what did you search for?
GPS monuments only, order "A" only??
?ÿ
When? 7-13-2021 (Friday the thirteenth came on a Tuesday this month). I used the NGS Data Explorer with Arizona as the search term. Then I moved the map to roughly center it on the Four Corners, put 5 miles as the search radius and got the map I showed.
No reason at all, just a whim.
(Friday the thirteenth came on a Tuesday this month).
Love the quote from Pogo.
When Friday the Thirteenth comes on Friday, it's double bad luck.
@warrenward?ÿ How can we find out more on the surveyor from Cortez, Colorado?
It would be nice to see his field notes. Can you get us anymore information?
Thanks, JOHN NOLTON
