Today the NTIA released the latest test results and issued its LightSquared-won't-work-with-GPS recommendation letter to the FCC. The FCC responded in agreement.

Tim Farrar of TMF Associates provides a good writeup with links in this blog post.

IMHO the most important thing to be done now is to establish some reasonable world-wide science-based interference standards for the spectrum used by and affecting GNSS. Hope this gets done in an expeditious manner.

Seems like the FCC is looking to protect L1 through 2020 and maybe beyond. The DoD has the option of turning off L1 in 2020 so legacy GPS may be dead at that point anyway. regardless, it sounds like LSQ is F'ed, and Falcone's hedge fund probably just met its demise. I was just reading that Falcone was already refusing to return investment money to investors, claiming its tied up investments that he can't get out of without taking a loss. Investors claim they were not told Falcone was going to invest in illiquid startup companies ... Between LSQ and angry investors, Falcone is going to spend the rest of his money on lawyers....

It couldn't have happened to a nicer company. RIP LightSquared.

And...

I am sure he will do fine. At least not any better or worse than presently. Probably spin that it was his pioneering developments that single handedly pressed the FCC into receiver standards etc etc.
It will be great for the GNSS indusry when such fine engineers concentrate on engineering and stay out of the spin side of issues.
I wonder how long this image will be left on the corporate website?
