I've used it to isolate errors when generating search files. I don't go so far as to find the field notes but rather input the data in the way it was likely run on the ground. Having started with manual theodolites and highway chains it's pretty easy to enter that way. Look at the plat, run around in Google earth 3D and take a stab.
For the record this isn't an every job thing. I only do it when the Plat has some obvious error...
