In case you don't know what to do for the next 5 hours you should definitely check out this site:

http://historicalmaps.arcgis.com/usgs/

The slider bar under the maps you load allows you to change the transparency to view earlier maps or the current background.

Did you get it to work. All I get is some dots spinning. I've tried it on a windows 7 machine and a windows xp machine in explorer.

Yes, I'm browsing with Chrome in Windows XP Pro. There were some maps that lagged a bit in downloading, but it all showed up eventually. I figured it was a server problem.

Gosh darn it Mike, you are giving away all the research secrets.

I'm sure soon you will be able to load the aerial photos for a backdrop.

Next thing you will tell everybody that you can easily load these historical maps on your smart phone and see your position on the map for nearly free?
