I am looking for a short biographical sketch of this surveyor who had contracts with the GLO in northeastern Wyoming in the 1880's. He might have been a brother to Edward F. Stahle since they had contracts in the same area. Basic information needed like where he was from, age, other occupation, etc.
U. S. Deputy Surveyor Louis F. Stahle (edit)
Couldn't find much with a cursory search, but did find some interesting clues:
Edward apparently continued his professional career as indicated by the Cheyenne, Wyoming Phone Directories from 1905 & 1910, respectively:
Louis (marked Bro. of E.F. Stahle) didn't make it to a mature age. He wound up in a "marble orchard" in Laramie County, Wyoming in 1884 at the ripe old age of " 22 yrs. & 7 mo."
Also found Edward, a white male, in San Francisco, at age 20. He was living in a Lodging House and listed his occupation as "Draughtsman". He listed his birthplace as California with parents b. Germany (F) and New York (M.)

Very interesting! No wonder that I can't seem to find much on Louis since he died so early in life. His death has me curious as to the cause. If I find anything additional, I will post it here.

J.P.,
You seem to always have a knack to dig up newspaper articles. I would imagine in 1884 there was at least one newspaper in the Territory that might have an obit or a juicy story about a government surveyor that fell prey to renegade Cheyennes. I just haven't done a good "sit down" on the searches.
Looking forward to learning more.
More on the brother. Louis's death in April seems a bit early in the year for having been attacked in the field.
October 2, 1899.

That's...interesting. A Google search turned up a reference here.

I believe Louis F. Stahle was the younger brother of Edward F. Stahle. He was issued contracts No. 137, 176, 189 and 195 from the Surveyor General of Wyoming. Beginning with No. 137 in Sept. 28, 1881 and ending with No. 195 in July 12, 1882. I'm not sure but I beleive he was from California (Bay Area). In a case I was involved in and in depositions there was a lot of speculation he was part of the Benson Syndicate. In the township 53 69 there was only one original corner found in the township! Not much for topographical calls in the notes, except for two latitudinal lines across the township where the topo calls fit very well. He subdivided 53 69 in two days....In the next township he performed that year, the BLM retraced his work and found 95% of the original monuments...go figure. Edward F. Stahle was a very good surveyor and I have retraced many of his surveys including the State Line between Wyoming and Nebraska in 1903. He was also the county assessor for Laramie County for a few years.

Am I reading that right?
> ....He subdivided 53 69 in two days....
Who was his party chief, TDD?
I hope..
my clients continue to pay after my demise...
Word has it that TDD taught him the "shortcut" method. It was legitimized with the so called "lack of water" in the region.

I knew you'd find it, J.P.
:good:
After all, aren't you the guy that doesn't quit digging until he finds the 'stone'?
Great work.
PS - Surveyors and bars aren't a good mix now and they weren't back then, either.

How interesting. Having known Mr. Stahl in his notes and footsteps, it is just surrealistic to be fitting more parts of the puzzle together. Great work!
Pablo
any relation, I wonder?
#37 Stahle, John F. H. was in the first group of surveyors to be licensed in the State of California as a land surveyor in 1891. H.J. Stahle was also a Sna Francisco surveyor.
A few more details:
Lewis Stahle was in a house of "ill repute" in Spearfish, Dakota Territory when he threatened Jack Morris before then taking a shot at him. Morris then returned fire and killed Stahle with several witnesses testifying that Morris shot only in self defense.
