I may have just been around to long, but;
Isn't it typical to design roads from south to north or east to west? and station accordingly?
I thought this was so that north would be up the page, or to the right, as is standard drafting convention. Am I wrong/ Old fashioned? Stuck in my ways?
I also don't straddle the tripod 🙂

Typical yes, but there are always exceptions 🙂
South to North, West to East is (was) "normal". However there HAVE been special considerations to change that.
I'm with Andy
We set alignments and stationing South to North and West to East keeping North to the top or right side of the sheet. I try to do this as much as possible as a matter of practice, but we do have a few slanted streets where we think outside the box.
You'd be backwards and upside down on the left coast. Most DOT (CA) projects I've been involved in are South to North and West to East. I recall that being a standard in the Plans Preparation Manual.
Most of ours start in town and stationed going out of town. That way when they extend the road later, the numbers keep getting bigger.
