The fire trucks are first class for sure and they take really good care of them.
The reason for the cold water or gaterade is they work in very hot strenuous circumstances and cold fluids are essential to health and safety. You or I can take a break on the way up the hill but those guys practically run up 30% slopes with 50lb hose packs while wearing yellow nomex suits (hot). They do a lot of PT. One day we were traversing down a hill. A Captain leading a crew up the hill (300 feet vertical of 2:1) stopped and talked to my employee (down hill from me). Then he passed up the crew (who weren't going slow) and stopped and talked to me (5 or 6 words) then he took off and passed them up again. That guy had huge thighs.
I like their attitude of spending a little more to get quality equipment that will last under the strain.

There are rarely lives on the line when surveying. Also, it generally a personal choice made by the Surveyor to drive a bondo buggy and duct tape his equipment.
