We use aluminum tripods for all elementary surveying labs so that small co-eds can carry them on campus. They are stable enough for a 3-hour lab attended by university Juniors. Not good enough for advanced courses that rely on high precision observations.

Aluminum tripods have been documented in the past as rotating during the day according to the passage of the sun through the sky. So-so for leveling, awful for turning angles.

What keeps the little tripod from blowing away? Looks like you'd have to ram-set the feet to the concrete to keep it steady.

Leica, then Crain Trimax.

But 99% of the time I'll use the Leicas in preference.

PS. the GST20.
