I'm planning to buy a new Trimble S7, my current one is 5603. I rented the S7 to try out the features, I think the difference between S5 and S7 is the Vision feature which I was not very impressed with, specially when working in the area with mixed sunshine and shades . Is it worth it to get a S7 or S5 will be enough?
Vision is WELL worth having in my opinion. Makes relocking the prism much easier. Also good for checking for unobstructed view of the prism. We have one S8 without it - it stays in the storeroom most of the time
We have both S6 and S8 units - the S8 turns significantly more slowly and so loses lock on the prisms (even the active ones) more often. So I only grab the S8 when I really need the extra accuracy. You might want to check the specs...
I really appreciate having the Vision feature, particularly when using a peanut prism as opposed to the active prism for picking up details on as-builts. Too many times I've had my S6 lock onto the reflective tape of my vest or something else reflective (snow flakes are the worst) and to have the ability to toggle to video view to confirm where the cross hairs are before storing the shot has saved me from numerous bogus shots. It's also useful when around a lot of trees and losing lock after passing behind one. Just find myself in the video and tap on myself on the screen to direct it where to look.
Guess just depends on what you're doing.
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
The S7 has vision, LIGHT scanning (7 points per second), and finelock.
The S5 replaces has the track light instead of vision. You can also purchase without active tracking.
Aside from these differences they are essentially the same instrument. If you go for the S5 make sure it is Active Tracking
We use the S6 and S7, and I like Vision, for the same reasons as others. Well worth it, in my opinion.

Didn't know the S8 was slower. I have used a couple and didn't notice the difference to an S6.
S3 and SPS620 have noticeably slower drives.
+1 for Vision as above.
I bought the S7, thank you removed link
