Question is as the subject states. We have a trimble r8 model 3 that we currently use on network. I am going to be buying another network rover, and am trying to get a real world comparison on the two models from users.

We have a Trimble R8 Model 3, and a Trimble R6 Model 2 (with every option except the internal transmit radio).
We use this set-up as a conventional base/rover and sometimes use one as a VRS-network rover.
The salesman told me the units would perform identically (as rovers). He was right. As far as I can see, they are the same.

I've been told that the R8 and R6 are the same except that the R6 will be L5 compatible.

However, I've also been told that by the time that there are enough L5 sats up I won't care anymore.

With the R8-3 the tracking seems a bit better inside of our local network. Its the R8-3 not the R6 that is L5 Capable. However, its not different enough to warrant getting a R8-3 over a R6 Model 2 unless you find a good deal.

Both receivers are virtually identical, what you will loose with the R6 is the ability to use constellations other than what is currently available. If you are planning on using a VRS network check with the network administrator and see if they are GNSS compliant. Here in Oregon the state's network does not use the GLONASS constellation yet so surveyors still fight to get good coverage at times, however the system is still free so one can't complain...too much.

Anyone reading this should check out the brand new R10 receiver this mornings introduction by Trimble www.trimble.com/r10showcase which is taking place at 8:00 AM PST
