The 5700 and 5800 are GPS only. No GNSS -no GLONASS, no GALILEO, no BEIDU. Neither has any internal transmitter capability. The 5700 has it's receiver and antenna as separate units. These are both late 1990's technology (no Bluetooth, for example).

The R8 is similar in outward appearance to the 5800 but has an internal transmitter and GNSS capability. There have been models 1, 2, 3, & 4 of the R8 and the latest (current) model is called the R8s.

The R7 has the separate receiver and antenna like the 5700 did but it includes GNSS capability, transmitter, & bluetooth.

Will R8 continue to be made, or is it the end of them now that there is the R10?

I can't say. But the R8s was introduced after the R10 became available.

There are times when I definitely want to have an external antenna, that is the reason I bought a used R7 (with Zephyr Geodetic 2 antenna) last year. I also have 2 5700's (similar, but no Glonass). But, I prefer to use 4700's (also have 2 units) with compact L1/L2 antennas over the 5700's. I use the 4700's a lot in static surveys (i.e. not for RTK, the lack of Glonass is debilitating).

I believe the R8 will be around for a while in various versions.

5700 and 5800 are L1 L2 GPS, The first series R7 and R8 are L1 L2 but have L2C added. R7 and R8 model 2 on up are GNSS, each newer model had more channels.

R7 = GPS only 5700 with modernized L2C tracking
R8 = GPS only 5800 with modernized L2C tracking

There may be more improvements that I am not aware of but in theory the R series will have a longer life if L2C replaces legacy L2...

Yea John the yellow R7 is GPS and your Gray R7 is GNSS and your grey model is actually kinda rare in the used market I have only seen 3 or 4 for sale in the 5 years I have been looking for one and most where bundled with a lot of other equipment I didn't want. You did good when you got that unit.

Yes the blue/grey R7 GNSS is basically equivalent to the R8 Model 2 so it has GLO and may have L5 too?. It's been some time since I sold mine but I really like the form factor for semi-perminant base installations.

One thing I always wondered but it is not a deal breaker for me is the R-7 version 2 a bluetooth device for connecting to the controller?
