Good Morning Everyone,

I've always used a Ranger/ TSC2 data collector as my controller for both my 5600 and my S6 robots and R8-Model 2 GNSS reciever for RTK. To me its the easiest solution to operate. I also have Trimble's CU controller that I've used with my S6 both onboard and robotic, but I find it very difficult to get around the CU because of the alphanumeric keys to the point that I've abandoned trying to use it.

Anyone care to share their thoughts on this? Does anyone prefer a Trimble CU over a handheld data collector?

(I'm hoping someone can persuade me to pursue the CU :-O )

The TCU is great for traversing through the forest. It just clips on the instrument and goes in the box with the instrument. For topo it's a bit clunky for typing in codes but if you use a code list it's not bad.

For serious topo I prefer to use the TSC2. Yesterday we did a topo with two people. I stood at the instrument with the TSC2 in my hand (in robotic mode) while the other guy walked around with the rod. We don't have an active prism so it's easier when there are a lot of trees and obstructions to be able to point the instrument on occasion when it needs it but I can go hold something out of the way so it can get the target and store the shot.

I'm afraid I can't convince you to use the Trimble CU, since I ditched mine for a TSC2. I can't stand the clunky alphanumeric input on the TCU.

The CU data collector was Trimble's attempt to conform to Geodimeter/Spectra Precision way of doing things. It was their top of the line controller when the 600 series was being promoted.

A numeric code system is very efficient once memorized. However, the learning curve is steep.

I used the CU for about 8 years because I work solo and mostly construction. Don't do much coding since I also do all the drawing. Liked that it used the S6 batteries so didn't have to take it in to charge. Liked that it sat in the middle of the rod instead of hanging off the side, and that it was lighter than the others. Still like it better, but the small screen was becoming harder on the eyes. I don't like the way my TSC3 hangs on the side of the rod, wish they made a bracket that would put it on the back instead.
