Hello all, I just bought 2 of these ( https://www.hayesinstrument.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_prod.html?p_prodid=2156 ) and they won't fit any of my tribrachs. I remember new tribrach adapters being tight in the past but it's been years and I can't remember how we resolved the issue.

Any ideas?

Gregg

Is it that the tribrach won't lock? The legs have set screws to adjust where they catch in the tribrach.

Sort of. I can't get the adapters to fully seat in the tribrach. I thought there was an allen head set screw for adjustment but it looks like only a roll pin so I'm not sure. And no, I can't turn the latch to lock the tribrach.

I'll have to take a closer look. My up close vision took a hit this year so maybe I need some reading glasses to see it.

If It Is Not Fuly Seating

look at the inside vertical to base fillet on the tribrach. Maybe there is a nub?

Then see how square that corner looks on the adapter. That may require filleting all around.

At that price you are looking at Chinese made who do not get every little nuance or dimension in proportion.

You probably already checked this....there is a set screw on the lock knob that sometimes is set in too far, not allowing you to turn it all the way???????

If It Is Not Fuly Seating

Ok thanks. I just sent an email to Hayes to see what they say. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something before contacting them.

I wondered how good they would be for that price but I've only heard good things about Hayes and I didn't figure much could go wrong with a tribrach adapter...

All the brands of tribrach adapters are very close to being interchangeable.

Some fit tight, some right and others are loose.

The difference is something like 1/32± of and inch between them.

Most tribrach have an adjustment on the tension and/or locking mechanism that can be set to accommodate a better fit. Many of these are a spring loaded mechanism and I have a few that the spring had bent and lost it required tension to hold and had to be reshaped to work again.

The adapters that are too loose can fitted with a cutout of a cardboard from something like a cereal box or whatever thickness to fill the gap under the adapter and atop the tribrach.

dshearon is spot on in that the pegs can be adjusted also to accommodate fitting different tribrach

good luck

Well, I sent Hayes an email last week because the tribrach adapters I purchased didn't look adjustable. The guy that replied said they were adjustable and that he pulled one off the shelf and it fit many different tribrachs as is. He also offered to send me two new ones. I accepted his offer and the new ones fit great.

I will be ordering from Hayes again.
