Hi folks

Please let me know how to download or import field data from Trimble 4000sse receiver for post-processing in Trimble Business Centre, the successor of TGO.

I have been trying all morning without any success.

Thank you ALL

Sam

I've only done it a few times. Would need the screen in front of me. One thing we had problems with was the need to add a device. If yours doesn't show up in the list of receivers you may need to add 1. We named all our receivers, and labeled them. That was only problem I remember, but it's been a few months.

Hi Mapmaker151

Thank you for your prompt response. I have added the required device (4000 series) but still not working.

Thanks anyway

Sam

With newer computers and newer software, I've found it increasingly difficult to download from older equipment utilizing serial ports. One trick that works for me is to disable then re-enable the serial port using Windows device manager. Also, with the 4000sse & ssi's that I have, I've started connecting the computer to the serial port on the charging station and using the built-in cable on the charging station to attach to the unit. Seems to produce a more stable connection that way. Good luck

Try GPLoad?

Try downloading your receivers using GPLoad.

Also, force the port parameters to 9600-8-N-1.

Your best chances of success will be with a built-in serial port. USB-to-serial converters may not do the trick.

Remember that way back when the 4000-series receivers were put out to pasture virtually every computer came with a hard-wired serial port. Very few do today.

Hi Glenn

Thank you for your continued support. I have tried almost everything I could and I decided to call it a day and try again tomorrow. It is now past three in the afternoon on Sunday at our part of the world.

The problem seems to be the connection from the receiver to the computer. I believe the computer recognised something because the receiver beeps when connected, however no connection is made.

I appreciate your continued support and same problem occurred when I tried gpload and Trimble data transfer.

I have to admit I am not familiar with TBC. TGO is fine for me but Trimble switched it off.

Sincerely

Sam

It's been about seven years since I used any 4000ssi units, but I seem to remember using GPloadto download the receivers.

Does TGO run at all? Is it possible to use TGO to download the receivers? How did you download them before TGO quit working?

Yeah, everything works on TGO except for the processing section.

To be more precise, the WAVE 2.35 processor module that GPSurvey and TGO evidently share won't compute fixed integer solutions from sessions logged after the billionth second. GPSurvey (and I assume TGO) will still compute code and float solutions if you select one or the other as the final solution you want, not fixed. Naturally, they work on older data just as fine as ever.

Since your cables work with TGO you can assume the cable is ok but have you checked for the latest driver for the cable? There might be an updated driver to make it work with Win 7. I use a Tripplite USB to serial adaptor to download my 4000ssi and 4400 receivers. I have the adaptor connected to the old 4 bay battery charger/data transfer module. If you have your cable, usb/serial adaptor, connected to the computer you can follow this path to get you to where you can change the com port and other settings that might help. control panel-devices-select your adaptor-hardware tab-properties-change settings-port settings tab.

I feel your pain and frustration. Been there myself.

I had this problem many times with the 4000 ssi's we used and the 'new' laptop. the data transfer rates don't match with some of the new software. I was able to get a 'null modem' cable with driver software and finally get the data transferred with DataTransfer. It took some time sometimes due to the nature of the data, and it never worked the first time. It was always the second go that finally downloaded the files I needed. Once you get your settings matching 9600-8-n-1, start download and it will kick you off, try again. the second time was always the charm. If you have scenarios that haven't been discussed please post them.

Make sure that your transfer cable is a true serial port. Either by getting a:

  • Serial to PCMCIA card
  • Serial to USB

Some of the serial to USB cable on the market are "replicators" and will fail to transfer data from some devices (a computer tech told me that years ago).

quatech.com is a good source for a good cable.

The other thing is as other mentioned, use GPLoad instead of data transfer utility.

Good luck

I think Jimmy has the solution. Down load it in TGO and then manually import it to the new software. If it won't down load in TGO there is obviously something wrong with your serial port or cable.

As a side note, I routinely have a problem downloading my SSE to GPSurvey. Sometimes it takes inserting the cable connections "just right" in order to have it work. Good luck. Don't you just love Trimble?

Colleagues

A week ago I posted an SOS message on the above captioned subject. I would like to thank and express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for all your comments. Your comments have all added up to solve my data transfer problem as well as other important things that was not aware of. The solution to my data transfer problem was simply change the cable and it all worked. I am now using GPload, which I was not aware before, to download the raw data for the students to use to carry-out post-processing.

Please be aware that on this part of the world,I come from a country which has a total residential population of less than 100k which is Tonga. I am teaching surveying at a regional university in Fiji and the only survey-grade GPS we have at this institution are 3 Trimble 4000sse. For GIs and Mapping we have the Juno handheld.May be you can help us by telling me where to go and ask for people or companies to donate their surplus or older model GPS for us to use.

Finally, please let me know a suitable GPS for Surveyors textbook for beginners so that I ask our bookshop to order for our students to use next year. I have searched through the internet but I believe you people know the contents better.
My email address is latu_s@usp.ac.fj.

Sincerely

Savae
