Touch screen on Ranger - screen protector = trouble?

I have gone through dozens of peel off screen protectors on Rangers and Recons over the last several years. This last one though, on a Ranger, had issues.

I removed the old screen protector and applied the new one and now the touch screen is daffy for some reason. The TDS menu tabs all work fine and most of the graphic command taps will work but not all.

When you tab into the map view almost everything on screen is unresponsive. When you attempt to tap on a line or point node the view will pan over or jump rapidly half the width of the view.

Did a touch screen alignment from a hard re-boot and it helped a little bit but not much.

Any ideas?

I've had a similar problem with a Carlson Explorer. I think that peeling off the old protector can separate the layers on the screen.

ALWAYS buy the screen protectors designed for the Ranger. We bought some different protectors one time, and like mentioned above, it peeled the top layer of the screen off. Ours was pretty obvious that there was a problem, but maybe yours is just a little bit damaged.

I've seen ones in the past pull off some of the coating also. I have a 200C now that I noticed the screen protector is really stuck on good and I'm afraid to pull it off as it may do damage. I think it is some kind of non-reflective coating on the screen that is the problem. Maybe I'll try to get it damp and see if it will release some.

A Trimble rep recently told me there are two different kinds of screen protectors. The static type and one that acutally has an adhesive. He said you can damage a touch screen if you are agressive in removing the adhesive backed protectors. But he said it can be done - just pull the protector back against itself (not up, away from the screen) and do it very slowly. I've been trying to resolve a non-responsive screen issue when the temp is below 30°F. I've been using the static protectors but he thinks the adhesive backed protector will take care of the issue of cold weather screen lockups. My issue has been with a GeoXT, not a Ranger but I just thought I'd pass along the information on the two different protectors.
