looking to buy a GRS-1. Need experience on this unit anyone use it and is it reliable .
I've had one for 2 years and am very pleased with it. Repeatability is very good. Learning curve from TDS to TopSURV is minimal, and IMHO TopSURV's the better program.
This is a very good receiver. One thing to consider is cell coverage. If you get into an are where you will need to connect to a traditional base (internal UHF/PacCrest radio) then you will have to rent/borrow both a base and a rover instead of just renting a base that will use your internal radio (the GRS-1 does not have one).
Another option is to use a traditional rover (Topcon HiPer, Trimble R8, Sokkia GRX-1) paired with a data collector that has a built in modem (Spectra Nomad X or Ranger 3, or Trimble TSC3(if using Trimble r8)) This will give you the same functionality as the GRS-1 and be versatile enough to work with a base broadcasting radio corrections as well as working seamlessly with your optical instruments.
I recently purchased a Topcon GRS-1 with a GSM modem, I think.?ÿ That is what the seller represented and what the Verizon guy told me today when I tried to get it activated under my current Verizon plan. He said I would need to work through AT&T or T-Mobile.?ÿ The device shows a Q26Elite installed which appears to be a CDMA modem based on internet literature. So I am confused.
?ÿ
Since the closest AT&T or T-Mobile store is an hour away I went to Walmart and bought a Simple Mobile Sim Card and a $30 no-contract unlimited plan (using the T-Mobile network) to see if I could activate it at home over the internet.?ÿ I got stuck when it asked me for the IEME number for the mobile device.?ÿ I can't find any such designation on the device or in any software screens.
Looking for help.?ÿ Has anyone recently purchased a GRS-1 and activated it with a cellular carrier??ÿ I appreciate all advice.
@dhunter?ÿ
The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique identification or serial number that all mobile phones and smartphones have. It is normally 15 digits long.?ÿThe IMEI number can be found on the silver sticker in the battery compartment on the device.
@dhunter I believe you would need to find a carrier that still offers a a compatible cellular service as AT&T and Verizon have both widely discontinued 3G and prior services and will continue to sunset this service throughout the US. If the unit has working WiFi, you could utilize an external MiFi hotspot.?ÿ
