We recently purchased a Topcon FC-5000 and overall things work well and it was cheaper than a Panasonic Toughpad.
I am pretty sure I have narrowed this down but has anyone had problems connecting to their RTK network?
The tablet has Verizon 4G and also Wi-Fi and it appears that any time they are both running it will not connect. I turn off the Wi-Fi and it then connects using the cellular connection as it should. Curious if others have seen this also since we also have a Panasonic Toughpad that has no issues with connection even when both are left on. I am also not positive that this is actually what is allowing it to connect until I use it more.
The other item is the way that the pop up keyboard displays in Magnet. On our Toughpad tablet running the same version of Magnet, the input and keyboard layout is very different. While it sounds trivial, in the new FC-5000 when you click on a code field, point number etc... it does not bring you to a prompt for new information, you must click on it again and even then you must backspace to put in a new code, point etc...
With the toughpad version, the moment you click in a field, it highlights the field and as you start typing it replaces the current field and prompts you for previously used codes. This does not happen with the new one.
It is not that difficult to work around but does become tedious when performing a topo or a survey that requires a lot of code or rod height changes.
Thanks in advance
Hello Gregg,
We've also had problems connecting to our RTK network. We selected multiple vs. single mount points to correct the problem. We've figured out the pop up keyboard displays too. We assigned the F1 key to display the keyboard. You can also undock the keyboard and slide it up to uncover input fields.
Regards,
Mark
Mark - thanks for the feedback.
in the past when we would "reset rtk" it took care of a lot of our radio problems.
For this newer system it appears that shutting off the wifi is the answer for us. Seems to be connecting quite nicely now.
Assigning the keyboard to the F1 key makes a lot of sense, I'll give that a shot.
The workflow on the Toughpad and its pop up keyboard is much smoother to me still.
Maybe we will learn more tricks as we use it.
thanks again.
I have not used the FC5000, therefore I can't comment on your issues. You may want to try Magnet Field 4.0, it was released last week.
Beware that when you open a Magnet Field version 3 file with version 4, you will be prompted to make a copy of the v3 file, and create a v4 file. Which means if you have multiple controllers, those with Magnet v3, cannot read Magnet v4 files. A real PITA, since I have found no way to save a v4 file back to v3. Been a problem with every major release.
Thanks Lee - I see that they keep talking about version 4 but when i log into the TotalCare site it is not available there.
Where are you finding that version?
Thanks for the heads up regarding compatibility.
Hmmm I just checked Topcon Total care site. Appears Topcon has taken Magnet Field 4.0 off the site already. I have the PC version it you want, I can place it on a share site. I have not found any problems, yet. User interface is very different in survey configurations, and map view settings.
There is a bug in version 3.3.1 where I can NOT store a measure location while in stakeout mode, using GNSS. Version 4 fixed that problem. V4 works well with robot too, can select prism constant with one click in topo or stake out.
Appears there may be a major bug if they pulled it off the website following a big press release of the Topcon ELITE. maybe Mr. @pmoran from Topcon can provide some information.
Of course I just realized that you can now update right at the device inside of Magnet.
just ran the "check for updates" and it found version 4 so I ran it. Took about 5 minutes and I am now running ver 4.
I am still playing around with this for now but hope their are no major bugs in it!
Doesn't appear to be many big changes.
I usually do not load the first version release of any software. hopefully this doesn't come back to haunt me.

It's up on TTC now. I think it was a small housekeeping issue- but then again I've been on Vacation.
Anyone using Magnet Field 4.0 or 4.1 need to upgrade to 4.1.2. ASAP! There is a confirmed glitch that is all of our worst nightmare...total data loss.
I manage just over 30 survey crews and had approx 15 or so running 4.0 and 4.1 and I had 3 data loss incidents accounting for about 20 hours of field time. If you look at the release notes for 4.1.2. you will see this is the only real purpose to the update.
Sidenote, there are some bugs to the FC-5000 as well. I currently have 5 in the field plus my personal one. Mine and one other can connect to almost all WiFi except our Verizon Jetpack mifi units. I have another that has a touchscreen issue, and our first one (Sokkia SHC-5000) had to get firmware reinstalled by vendor for it to boot properly after a couple weeks. I also have about 22 Toughpads out running Magnet. We have experienced about 25% having major communication issues with Topcon QS and PS robots.
Can anyone tell me how to set-up a homegroup network, or a shared network folder where I can copy and/or transfer raw data and csv's to and from the desktop computer folders to the SHC-5000/FC-5000 network folders?
The laptop runs windows 7, and the desktop runs windows 10. Unfortunately bluetooth isn't included on either operating systems, so I'm also having difficulty setting up an active-sync/windows mobile device connection. Should I continue to scour google and youtube for these answers? Or is it worth the time-saved and money spent buying another laptop with bluetooth on it?
Has anyone found out how to use the docking port on the bottom of the tablet?
Why is such a gorgeous piece of equipment making me feel like a monkey courting a football?

The dealer was sweet enough to suggest trying youtube 🙂
Has anyone had trouble with the usb port? I had the pad resting half-way down the tripod leg, and it dropped 2' plus or minus onto asphalt. Now the usb port wont recognize a thumbdrive or the adapter cable for the conventional. Not trying to rent a robot but topo season is upon us...
Dropbox or Google drive or any of those cloud storage apps would work as a shared folder to put files in and access from all your devices.
I find the easiest way to exchange files between the FC and PC is sending to Bluetooth. You can buy a small USB BT adaptor that will give your PC or laptop bluetooth connectivity. https://www.targus.com/au/acb75au
Just set up permission to connect to network. Share a folder on your desktop PC. Then map a drive letter to the shared network folder. This works best with ultimate version of Win7 and 10. You may have difficulties with home version of Windows. If so, then try using dropbox, google drive or another cloud service.
There is a docking station available for your tablet. Search for Juniper Systems Mesa?ÿ M2 dock station.
