This is the 1/4 corner 34/35 T27N R19W.
This tamarack is surviving, but the 2 pine BT.s are dead and gone. One fell in what is now the road.

This is the section corner to the soth 34/35/2/2. Was originally a post. hwy plans call for a fnd iron pin. subsequently the bolt and last was a Certificate of Survey calling for a PK nail. No one SET anything- they all just found stuff.
We staddled the pk and stated digging. 0.8' of plant mix. got the bolt, then the hub remains, then the "X" is on the top of a 4x4 concrete R/w marker. no notes on who set it. It is at the hwy station shown on plans. There is a 3.25 in AC in concete there now.

How did you dig through the asphalt? I have dug through it before, but it was not that neat.

We have a Bosch electric jack hammer we run off of a generator. We use either the straight asphalt blade or the curved clay spade as shown in this picture. It goes thru the pavement pretty well on warm days like today was. Other times we'll bring out a concrete saw and cut a clean square hole.

Nice find Rankin!

Now to continue off thread, I use a Wacker BHF30S breaker driver. I've owned one personally for about 25 years... still starts and runs great! If you can find one of those in decent shape, it should last a long time! Mine was around $1800 - used - about 25 years ago. I've invested less than $100 in maintenance and repairs.
