To buy GPS: Call your another surveyor, and ask to go with him, next time out. Offer use of ATV or chainsaw, or just to be his handy man. After doing this, and learning for a day or three, then HIRE a surveyor to do a project for you. Then, RE run it with Total Station. OR go to an old project, and re shoot some of your control. And do a project.
The hands on learning is important. Also, knowing that when the constellation is bad, nothing is gonna work.
Just thinking about John Giles, and his dilemma. It is a very different way to get a job done.
