Out of the corner of my eye, I caught this guy lighting in a tree near Lake Livingston the other day. So I swung the instrument in his direction to get a look see and thought as long as I'm here I'll try snapping a few shots with my phone while looking through the scope. It's not as easy as I thought it would be.

When all was said and done, I caught this guy looking for scraps. I believe he went away disappointed.

By the way, that was a catfish in the left talon of that eagle.

Pretty sure that is not an eagle.

It is an Osprey. (aka Fish Hawk)

Very nice photos. Thanks for sharing.

We saw a red tail hawk flying away with a snake in its talons yesterday :-).

We watched a big Sky Crane Helicopter shagging logs to the landing through the total station yesterday but didn't think to take a photo. Those guys never stop for more than a few seconds.

We saw a bald eagle yesterday flying away with baby kitten in its talons... 😉

Seriously though one day I was watching this bird feeder which had squirrels and all sorts of birds feeding from it, suddenly death from above, a hawk swooped in to the feeding ground and got one of the baby squirrels, nothing but a bunch of fur and some blood left over.

I felt bad about seeing that, the poor fella was enjoing his lunch and Bam!

The scene went from serene to carnage in an instant, I had on classical music and it was unexpected and a strange thing to wittness, like a squirrel apocalypse or something.

I wish

the hawks would get a BUNCH of squirrels around my house. I just spent a few hundred dollars having a hole in my roof repaired. Dang squirrels gnawed a hole just above the gutters. GRRRRR.

Larry,

Thanks for the education. In the immortal words of Rocky Balboa, "now I know the day weren't no waste." 🙂

The Lake Livingston area does have bald eagles, I saw one last spring near the fork of Kickapoo and Rocky Creeks.

A few years back I saw a barn owl flying down the street, about 15' off the ground, with what looked like a rope flapping along behind it. I hear this godawful screaming, run up the street to find out the rope was actually the leash attached to the recently deceased Yorkshire terrier my neighbor was walking, had to get her daughter to come get her and take her to the emergency room. Death from above, indeed.

My folks had a small dog. A Hawk tried to pick it up one time when we were camping but he was just heavy enough so he lived. That dog adored my Mother and she couldn't stand him.

Speaking of low flying birds, a few years back I was working in a subdivision where the street ran up the crest of a small ridge and the trees had been cleared on either side so that the tops of the remaining trees were slightly below the street elevation. I was standing at the edge of the street when I heard a loud whoosh come from behind and pass close to the right side of my head. I looked up and realized that I had been buzzed by a turkey flying from one tree line to the other. He couldn't have been more than 8-10' off the ground. It's like being buzzed by a 747 instead of a Cessna.
