Yesterday we received a call from a person at the Department of Roads stating that we had a section corner monument that was going to be removed due to new paving. He said it was in one of the cast iron "Survey Monument" wells that we typically set in paving to protect the monuments. The location didn't fit anything we had in that area, but since it was well outside the city, we were the only other agency that would have had a monument in a "Survey Monument" well. The crew opened the lid and discovered a 2" conduit with wires. It was off the section line in a return to a trucking business, so obviously nothing to do with surveying. I think a contractor who had poured the return years ago had probably salvaged this monument well from another project and needed to protect this wiring with something.

I've found the other situation, too: a monument inside a well marked "WATER."

I just wish that I worked in an area where the Road Crews actually noticed that they were about to take out a survey monument. Around here it seems like it is "Monument? What's a monument?"
