this job is getting out in the big country. After driving 10 miles off the highway on a private road I get to this ranch house area. They needed to see where a Section line runs and needed it staked. It was pretty easy even though the country is very hilly.
Section corner:
I/4 corner:
The 1/4 corner sits about 500’ above the valley floor and 400' above the section corner; there is still a bit of snow near the end of the valley. It’s probably about a week before the grass will turn green after the winter sleep.
It took about an hour to run the line they needed.
Moe,
something about the Survey Gods comes to my mind ...
I see you have the receiver attached to your ATV, never had any problems with parts getting loose inside the receiver due to the vibrations? We have a similar setup on our van with our R6 units, we don't go off-road. Lately we had some issues with bad bluetooth communications and a failing power unit ... our Trimble dealer suggests not to use the units attached to a driving vehicle, we should use the construction antenna's for this situations, they seems to have a separate receiver?
nice pics, thanks for sharing it here,
Chr.
You are so right Christ!
I don't drive with it like that. I put in one of the two padded bags on the front. The data collector I leave up if I need to navigate to a point, otherwise it goes in the other bag. Once I get where I'm going I click it onto the mount and let it get fixed.
I have a 5700 with a zepher that I use for topo. But when I first got GPS I had a L1/L2 antenna on the rover and even that would get rattled until it had to be sent in. The zepher seems to work best.
It really shakes the 5800 or the R8 when it's on a mount on a 4-wheeler.
Those kinds of off road jobs are fun. I wish I got to use my quad more, but instead I get flat tires in my truck trying to go 600' to a corner, instead of walking....duh. My general rule is anything knowingly over 1/4 to 1/2 mile I use the quad, especially now that snake season is upon us.
Tend to agree with Chris about the solid mount for TSC2. Mine rides on the seat between my legs most of the time. I learned after the pin in the bracket broke. But I do have a compartment I set it in for short & smooth jaunts, or for just sitting. I get nervous watching the R8 rattle around too, but what are you going to do.
My atv has spoiled me. I take it to pretty much every job assuming I'll use it unless it turns out that I can't.
Nice pics Moe. What part of the country is that? Some people have a lot of space around them!
The valley is in southern Montana. There is a neighbor's house about 1.5 miles east, the main ranch house is about 5 miles north, probably 4 miles south to the next house and maybe 6 miles or so to the west.
The ranch used to be pretty large, around 400 sq. mi.(in a number of seperate units) but they have sold off portions and acquired other land so I don't know how big it is anymore, but it's still large.
I do enjoy going out to places like it. The days seem to fly by.
:good:
I love my job.
