I'm working on a project that's mostly about establishing geodetic control but also requires reestablishing the location of a quarter corner that got wiped out by construction. The control work is fairly small scale, with most tie distances between 1/2 mile and a mile, so I ran a pair of 20-minute fast-static sessions on each one.
After adjusting the GPS work I set up on one point and backsighted another 1/2 mile away so I could set the quarter corner monument, but the backsight check distance was off by 0.06'. That was quite a bit more than I was expecting, so I checked temp and pressure settings, but they were okay. Then I remembered that I had left a full-size prism at the backsight instead of the mini that I mostly use. I changed the prism type in the DC and reshot the backsight, and this time the miss was 0.004'. Much better!
That's why after too many times, I finally got Leica's 0.00 mini.
Are you going to pincushion the dimple?

I just made it bigger. 🙂
I worked with a young eager beaver back in the late eighties. After running a traverse around an apartment complex, I mentioned I had to adjust the traverse before we started locating improvements. We had about 0.12 of error and were using the 48gx with aTDS card. While talking to another crew who had just pulled up to help us locate improvements. I turned around and saw him pounding on one of the control points. I asked him, what the he** are you doing, he replied "adjusting the traverse". I wanted to be angry, but the guys laughed so hard, I had to laugh also. They never let him forget it either.
Sorry didn't mean to hijack your post, but the bigger dimple recalled that memory from my useless knowledge folder.
