4+ hour static session on SW Corner of Wyoming

Sandstone obelisk set in 1873, USGS Disk set in 1899

Hard work, but somebody has to do it!

That's Mark Silver w/ the Banjo...

Looks like it says $250 fine for disturbing it, which sounds like a lot of money for 1899.

Taking lessons from TDD?

(for those who haven't been around long enough to remember him: TDD famously once said he could survey with a banjo if he didn't have other equipment.)

Joking aside, bluegrass or old-time clawhammer style?

You would have to ask Mark 😎

I could however recognize most of the tunes though...

Yeah, that number NEEDS to be updated to reflect 100+ years of inflation.

That's for sure.

It was a bit breezy there yesterday, but the Survey Oil didn't get warm :innocent:

The next one on my "to do List" is about 30 miles South of Yesterday's observation.

That country fascinates me. Any photos looking about the horizon please?
Interested in your reason for the observations.
Is it a job or an interest?
Either way it'd be both for me.

You've got some fascinating country.
(I've watched Longmire for a while, gives a good look at your neck of the woods, but probably filmed all over the place?)
I'd miss the smell of our eucalyptus forests though.

Mark might post a few pictures that "pan around' the site.

The good ones will be in a couple of months when I can get up to D160 in the Uintas.

I seem to recall that spot, but it has been more than a few years.

I don't remember you bringing lawn chairs though!

P.S. Nice sandstone obelisk. As I recall there are some chisel marks on at least two faces (I wasn't able to find an NGS data sheet for it).

It's got a LOT of scribing on all four sides. As I recall, it was cut and marked in SLC, and brought to the site in a wagon.

Here's the Data Sheet

We put up signs, "SURVEY MARKER, DO NOT DISTURB."

So if anyone talks I say, "Shhhh don't disturb the monument."

Loyal,

I looked for all the data sheets in Uinta County, WY and only found the azimuth mark. I see the data sheet states that the SW corner of Wyoming is in Summit County, Utah.

Note to self: Don't assume that the NGS State/County search will find all stations on the State and/or County line!

Well, I searched on Uinta County, Wyoming and only found the azimuth mark. The data sheet shows the SW Corner of Wyoming as being in Summit County, Utah.

Note to self: Don't assume that searching NGS data sheets by State/County will pull up all stations on the State and/or County line.
