I'm not sure I understand this correctly, and wanted to run it by the Survey Pro users.
If I check the 'Fixed Backsight' box when I'm in the backsight screen, this then makes my foresight heights the same height as my backsight heights ??

No, I don't believe so. I believe that this simply tells the software you have a backsight "stacked" on the point, and will retain the HR that you use for your backsight check.

Thanks Jimmy. I got that from someone, highly placed in our company, but it of course struck me as odd what the utitlity in using a fixed backsight for your foresight rod heights would be. Your explanation was the assumption I worked under.

I don't set a fixed backsight height. It caused me some problems years ago when the rodman used a height different than what was fixed. I do shoot and record my backsights since then. If there a difference it'll show up when I check (shoot) the backsight.

You got me on that one, Jules. The fixed backsight I envision is a stationary backsight i.e. a tripod and tribrach, or a bipod and prism pole plumbed over the backsight point, and remaining there for the entire operation. I am not sure if that is what you mean, or the rodman returns for the backsight check, with the foresight pole.

Your right R.J. a fixed backsight would be a backsight at a fixed height which may not be the same as the foresight rod. This allows you to check your backsight without changing the foresight rod height.

Yes, rodman returns for the backsight check with the foresight pole. I found it faster when running choppy wooded topo x-sections to have the rodman give me a backsight rather than to go back and move the bipod and prism pole forward to take a few shots away from the main baseline, to then get back on the main baseline and then use the set backsight bipod and prism pole on the next setup.

If you set the backsight to fixed IT WILL CARRY the backsight fixed rod height to the foresight rod height in side shot/ traverse mode...at least in the version I'm running.

Thanks. Just to double down on the simple questions here, once you enter the traverse/sideshot menu you have the option to change the foresight rod height? I'm maybe just asking this out loud so I'm not missing some detail.

Yes. You have that option for every foresight shot. Look at the screen for the HR. Same thing for bachsights.
