I would like to start my 18 year old on some kind of surveying text/course. I had the old ICS course, but I do not know where I stored it. Something that starts out very basic. Any suggestions? Anyone got anything they want to sell cheap or giveaway? I had him doing a basic hand/board drawing course already.

How about Wolf and Ghilani? You probably don't have to have the latest edition - I bought the just-outdated one for less than $20. It covers classical techniques through GPS theory and practice.

Edit - I don't see any of them on Amazon under $35 at the moment. Maybe ebay?

What about Surveying Practice by Kissam? I believe that is the name. I can't put my hand on my copy at the moment.

That was my surveying textbook while I was in college. I refer to it every now and then.

I've owned and used several, but Elementary Surveying by Wolfe seems to be the best, IMO at breaking down and explaining concepts in a clear, easy to read format without dumbing the subject down. My version is from the early or mid 90s.

The caltrans lsit prep course is quite good in my opinion. The price is very reasonable as well.

Sam,

Copy the link below and paste into a new window. It links to a site where I have uploaded some pdf files I use for surveying classes and NC exam review classes. Feel free to use them for educating you kids on surveying. Let me know what you think of the info. This is older stuff and does not cover GPS.

I agree with Evan. Elementary Surveying by Wolfe is a good one to start with.

Also the ICS(now Penn-Foster) stuff is good. I had it too, about 20 years back.

I mysteriously recieved an "Elementary Surveying" text in the mail from Amazon. Much thanks to whoever kindly sent it.
