I had to survey a historical site last week between Bruges and Damme.
Exploring Google Maps you will discover two star patterns, two forts, remainders of the defense of Bruges from the 18th century.

Inside the big one is the village of Damme.

Also our Cadastral maps reflects the patterns.

The 'fort van Beieren' located at the Southwest hosted 5 battalions and will be renovated, the old earth slopes and ditches will be made again.
Here's a link that explains a lot about the history, the concept and the specific parts of the fort.

Fortified Places

A lot of the slopes are still there but some have been modified through history.

Most of the trees are a type of Canadian Poplars 'Populus Canadensis Marilandica' these are very sensitive for winds.
We mostly haven winds from the West here, The main branch always grows at the wind-side which leads to spectacular 'Out of plump' trees.

Christof.

Good Belgium snapshot, gray skies, green grass.

It reminded me of my trip to in 1996 (family near Antwerpen).

Dank U,

Cool stuf Christof. Nice pics.
I believe the "star shape" walls you are talking are called ramparts.
The start shape gave the archers all kinds of range of defense.
Plus the attackers would have to get between star points and thus
open up their flanks to attack by the defenders.
I suppose Sun Tzu would have liked that as a defender. Of course
he wasn't much into defense.

Great pics as always, Chris!! :good:

That is weird, seeing those trees grow like that because of the wind. Very interesting. 🙂
