If you go with a half ton just get one with the extra leaf springs for camper. Depending on weight gets you some serious payload in a half ton.  But I do prefer the 3/4 and 1 ton ex as mentioned above the things are not easy to get in to the bed as they are so tall. Which is why I prefer a flat bed. And just custom build my boxes as I need.

They used to sell 'heavy' half-ton pickups as OleMan referenced. But there is a lot more that goes into a 3/4-ton pickup, like heavier frames and other components.  I have a 2001 F250 with +408k mile on the odo and I still fill fine driving 100 miles out and back a gravel road to the job site fully loaded with kit.

I'm not sure that there is much of a bed height difference between 1/2- and 3/4-ton trucks anymore, at least in the Ford, GMC, Dodge flavors.
