Virginia Department of Transportation is requiring these signs be retroreflective

http://www.virginiadot.org/business/resources/ted/final_mutcd/standard_highway_signs_book.pdf

W21-V8 - upper right hand corner of page.

At my old company we had a VDOT Inspector kick our crew off of a jobsite for not having the proper sign (we had an older one which was not retroreflective.) So I want to make sure I purchase the correct ones.

Thanks!

Try these. Not sure what the difference is between reflective and retroreflective but they should have what you want.
I recommend the 36 inch if it meets your requirements, much easier to store.

I believe the 3M Diamond Grade signs are retroreflective...but don't take my word on it

Cool, It's kinda like an animals eyes at night. The closer you are to the light source, the more reflection you see.

"retro" by definition means styles or fashions from the past. So maybe it means the old-style reflective material instead of all that modern stuff. That (modern stuff) would be neo-reflective....

Maybe it needs to say "Survey Party Ahead"......

from wikipedia:
A retroreflector (sometimes called a retroflector or cataphote) is a device or surface that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflection_%28physics%29&apos ;">reflects light back to its source with a minimum of scattering.

Learn something new every day, thanks.

I like Tom's definition better. I was hoping he'd find some old sign with cat's eye marbles in it for the lettering...

There might still be a free set near Siler City, NC.

The first company I worked for was a small shop - we didn't do any official DOT work that required signs, but the owners had, at some point in the past, decided that they wanted signs like that anyways.

So they made some signs of their own. Same size and color, but not the same words. Apparently whoever made them did not run the language by anyone else to see if there could be a misinterpretation.

The signs said "SLOW SURVEY CREW".

Incidentally, the crew that used them the most were known as the "short bus crew".

I have a couple of these (48") and the heavy bases they sit on that I had to get for DOT work. I would let them go cheap ($100 for both) plus shipping,
which would be high.

I have been shopping for the sign only.
Have half dozen standards and the fiberglass cross straps that hold the signs.
The few local vendors I've checked with sell signs as a complete assembly and will not sell only the sign.

The term I use to describe that sort of reflection quality that returns the light back to its source is "prismatic".

I was able to purchase them locally from Hawkins Graves in Lynchburg, VA. So they carry them in stock, and guaranteed to meet VDOT standard.

I imagine I'm a motorist who has never heard of surveying or surveyors before...SURVEY CREW AHEAD, "Oh how nice, they are going to ask me about my highway experience today."

Even the UC Davis student pavement study crew uses ROAD WORK AHEAD like virtually everyone else, or SHOULDER WORK AHEAD.

I wonder how many young people here don't even know what that is?
