I've, unfortunately learned the hard way - When we left Juneau, I decided that we sell as much as possible and replace - at $2/lb for shipping it had to be cheaper, right. I had heard that when a former coworker had made the same move it cost him about $17K for his whole house (similar to mine) and car. As it was we only shipped the bed, nightstands, TV and it's stand, plus whatever household stuff we couldn't even give away/donate/sell and one car cost us about $10K, so what little that I got for what we sold went to replace - first thing was a dining room set and all the ones we liked were out of stock and had to order, I was fine with that as long as there was a workable patio set in stock (I don't mind eating outside, not like we're still in Juneau) That was supposed to be delivered in early Feb, now will not be until end of March - which coincidentally is the same time frame for the coffee and end tables that we ordered a couple weeks ago. So far it probably would have cost the same to ship as it has been to replace and we wouldn't have to wait, the stuff we shipped arrived about two days after our closing (took about the time that the mover gave us, 6 - 8 weeks, was close to the 6 weeks) and we still need to add a second bedroom set at some point.?ÿ

Working from home, I would need to scan about a ton of files before moving like that.?ÿ For the most part, the only furniture I would ship would be of the antique, family- or neighbor-connected items.?ÿ My work desk requires three people to pick it up and move without straining.?ÿ Hasn't moved a half inch in over 20 years.?ÿ Definitely would be buying a new bed, refrigerator, microwave, stove, printer, air conditioners (window mount), dining table and chairs, office file cabinets, work desk, etc.

My original plan was to rent a small U-haul and go on the ferry with it and the car, but after researching my options it would have cost me the same to move it myself (plus two tanks of gas every so often, hotels and meals from Bellingham to Phoenix) as the movers cost - so I spent the same and saved my back at the same time. The bed was the only piece of furniture that SWMBO was adamant about keeping. If I had gotten what I expected for selling the replaceable furniture, I should have come out ahead, but I guess it was just not meant to be. Also to note, but it was an expected expense - I replaced my old Ranger with a nice shiny new golf cart, she needs it to get around Sun City and join some of the "Old Lady Clubs" (she hates when I call them that) while I have the car to commute.
