Interesting. I know practically nothing about Prince Edward Island other than it is part of Canada and far away from me. However, within the past week I was doing some genealogical research on a local fellow who had passed away recently and discovered that the birthplace listed for one of his ancestors simply said Prince Edward. It took me a bit to realize that it should have said Prince Edward Island or, at least, Canada. Initially, Prince Edward made absolutely no sense to me.

Perhaps I should drive up and check it out.;-)

The famous Anne of Green Gables stories are based on PEI.

Go!

It only took me 13 hours to get there driving from NY. Your mileage may vary 😉

Green Gables is a nice visit, but the surrounding area is certainly the more touristy part of the island.

Do Nova Scotia while you're at it. Check out Halifax (Peggys Cove, Maritime Museum, ect) and enjoy the beautiful rugged coastline. Ferry service can bring you back to mainland Canada across the Bay of Fundy. Maybe you'll see some whales.

33 hours, 30 minutes per Mapquest

To get from my house to Prince Edward Island according to Mapquest would take 33 hours and 30 minutes plus any adjustments for slowdowns in large cities and conditions in the last eight miles. My journey would pass through Kansas City and Hannibal, Missouri to Springfield and Joliet, Illinois to Hammond, Indiana to Benton Harbor and Detroit, Michigan to Windsor and Toronto, Ontario to Montreal and Quebec, Quebec to Fredericton and Sackville, New Brunswick before making a sharp turn about two miles from the border with Nova Scotia to stay in New Brunswick via Port Elgin to reach the eight mile-long Confederation Bridge to finally arrive in Borden-Carlton, Prince Edward Island. Then I could begin the tour of the huge Province. Today's weather predicts winds of up to 100 km per hour on the bridge which is comparable to a yellow traffic signal condition.

I'm pretty sure I would have to stop a few times along the way to fill up and empty and sleep while completely ignoring any sightseeing opportunities. So, the 33.5 hour journey, one way, would surely be more like a week.

There is also a Prince Edward County in SE Ontario on the north shore of Lake Ontario. There's been an interesting series in the local paper that is essentially a diary of Samuel Holland's 1764-1765 survey of the Island that will be published in it's entirety later this year. The original map is being refurbished (not the quilted version) and will be on display this summer in Charlottetown to mark the 250th. anniversary if your in the neighbourhood. A bit of local trivia . . the local community college was initially going to be called the Samuel Holland Institute of Technology until they realized how it would look as an acronym.

Love this post, I am in Nova Scotia....if you come, check out Springhill, mining town in the late 1800's and first half of 1900's...and birth place and home town of
Anne Murray.

3 major mining disasters and two fires that practically wiped out most of Main Street.

Think of the money they could have made on T shirt sales

OMG! That would have ranked right up there next to Friends University of Central Kansas located in Wichita. Many years ago I read about Wayne Tustin in California who was an expert on everything to do with vibrations. He founded the Tustin Institute of Technology. California would not issue him a personalized auto license plate with those initials. (Random vibration in perspective, WAYNE TUSTIN and ROBERT MERCADO, Tustin Institute of Technology, Santa Barbara, U.S.A., 1984. No. of pages: 200. Price: $100)

33 hours, 30 minutes per Mapquest

About 10 years ago I went to PEI and Nova Scotia when I still lived in Kentucky. We made the trip in two days. It is a long way up there. We took the Ferry from Bar Harbor, ME to Nova Scotia and then drove across the bigger island to to far end, hoped on another ferry to PEI.

Haven't been back since the bridged to PEI..seems like it would take away from the cool factor of the place.

I would highly recommend it to all....

Dave-

I had the good fortune to live next to an amazing couple, Elaine and Norman Campbell who, along with the also very talented Don Harron, wrote Anne of Green Gables for the Charlottetown Festival.

Listening to the 'previews' was so good.

Do visit PEI as it is a terrific place.

Cheers,

Derek
