Like this crew:

That at the NW corner. The RCE 1216 pipe was not even buried. They never bothered to even look for it. It was just 80 feet downslope in open weed area.
That's bad. But this is even worse.
NE CORNER

The pipe below that other survey crews pipe is again, RCE 1216. Record between the two is 180.00', measured is almost the same...If I told you how close you would just smirk. Barnett (RCE 1216) always did prime work.
Yesterday we found that witness rod but did not search down for the pipe. I knew it was there so this afternoon we went back and I had the guys just start shoveling. I could tell that they felt it was a waste of time, after all, there is a pipe already here.
I had the last laugh on that one.
Yup.
Good answer.

My favorite "pincushion" is when I start to drive a rod or pipe and then I hear this "Tink", pull my rod, dig deeper and find a rod or pipe. I have actually driven a rod into an open pipe.

Or rather, the PLS I worked for today.
His original subdivision, all corners found, including the NW corner of the subject lot. The rebar had been driven in a substantial root, then suffered the ravages of the boxblade from the landscapers on the adjacent lot. It was bent nine ways to Sunday, and could not get it out of the root, even with a large pair of Visegrips and a prybar.
I finally hammered the whole mess as far down as I could get it, with the cap removed and the top beat down below the root, then set another rebar and cap. It has a slight list to starboard, as I had to start it next to the other rebar, then lean it to position at ground level.

That's really cool, but why wouldn't you have beeped up the previous pipe before you started driving your rebar through it? Just asking.

Don't you all know, the higher pipe WINS!

Pincusioning in perfectly acceptable, I suppose, having never heard of such a thing.
Pincushioning, on the other hand, is bad.
ditto Stephen
I put a rod through a really old rusted out pipe once. The pipe [remnant] was right where it was supposed to be - at least by our findings. It was pretty well rusted apart so we stuck a rod down the middle of it.
what upset me worse
Was a time or several I was told to "flush it". Meaning "don't remove the found pin a couple feet away, just drive it flush out of sight". Something about it just never has set well with me.

Wow, that is BAD.

Neveer mind, back to you, Chedder Cheese.

Sadly, the modus operandi for several local companies. The problem is, when you flush someone else's capped rebar, you destroy the cap. At that point, it is hard to determine just who did what, sort of like finding 3 crimped top pipes at the same location.
Good job Paul.
I love it when the crew goes out on a tough job and reports "we couldn't find that pin" then I take them back out there and find it. It proves to the young guys that the old dude in the office still has a little surveying left in him.

Hahah Thanks Snoop! But I do NOT work with anyone under 48, so were all old guys.
When we first got to this corner the guy who was working with me gets a phone call from his son and that pretty much ended the day. If he had not of gotten the call, the RCE 1216 pipe would have been uncovered. So, next day 3 of us, age total about 162 years, shoveled it out

Yep, am an active member of the Wheezin' Geezers Patrol as well. Two of us can tip the time clock at 107 years.

So much interference from trash that I couldn't get a signal. When I dug I just didn't get quite deep enough the first time.
I have also found rods and pipes that I couldn't get a signal until the Shonstedt tip was only a couple of inches away, without any dirt between the two.
Then there are the non-magnetic ones.
