Although I wasn't a solo operation when I was on my own, lumbar spine issues that worsened over time caused me to sell my business and go back to a desk job.
Many times, we are paying in our later years for things that happened forty, fifty and more years in the past. Slow deterioration does not reverse quickly.
Huh? What did you say? Say it again, louder, slower and while facing me. Oh, you can't hear me, either. Well, ain't this a fine kettle of fish?
So thirty years later I learn that I wasn’t indestructible after all. Sort of, ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’, to which I now say, what doesn’t kill you is just as likely to leave you crippled later.
Gee, does that sound familiar. Sitting quietly in my office yesterday morning when my wife came by for a hug. This is good, right. The moment I put my arms around her I felt the lower back spasm, and it got a lot worse.
I went surveying today on a large site with a very long (over 1000 feet) building and lots of parking, so I wisely used the light weight fixed rod. I correctly assumed that a lot of walking would help, and it did. The problem was when I moved my arms to hold the rod and key in the data. Spasm every time. I stuck it out until 2 pm and next up is sitting quietly out front at sunset with my glass of wine, hoping the local bobcat will come by.
As to clients, they can be remarkably understanding (bad backs are universal). Mine always tell me not to worry about it, and take care of myself.
The bobcat: Strolled past me last week when I was sitting out front and he was not two feet in front of me, minding his own business, just going for a walk. Probably thought that lump (me) was part of the lawn chair so not his concern.

Your fifties are when you pay for acting in your thirties and forties like you were still in your twenties.
Well after she gets off the phone my wife is going to help me out today since she is off on Fridays. I will have the least qualified but best educated surveying assistant working for me today and I don't even have to pay her. I just have to make sure she doesn't get hurt because her DDS is way more valuable than my PLS.
For myself, just plain old good socks make life bearable. After 5+ miles of digital levels the other day, my feet hurt pretty bad. Been going through the sock collection for the socks with the least amount of holes in them. Turns out bad holy socks eat holes in the boot insoles, making things worse.
Merino Wool is your savior.
They are expensive, but they are worth it.
That's assuming you have good boots too...
Physical therapy (PT) is care that aims to ease pain and help you function, move, and live better. You may need it to: Relieve pain. Improve movement or ability. Prevent or recover from a sports injury.
