I worked a new graduate with a four year degree. Asked him to slope stake a pond He had no idea of the concept. My 18 year old son had to teach him how to set up the gun. I walked by the B.S and looked to see if he was over the point he was off the nail . He said he was sorry. Could not hammer a hub to hard for him. The four year degree does not to these kids how to survey or any of the finer points of surveying. Least squares does not matter if you you can't make a real surveying decision. Education is only a 50 percent of he surveying Profession. I will probably go back to our local community college for my new hires these kids don't have over bloated ideas of what they are worth.

Wow...some reallly insightful (ok some a little scary) comments here. However most of you are reading waaaaaaaaaaaay to much into my little statement (which i kinda thought all y'all would do 🙂 )

He and I both had a chuckle about my lack of communication with him, I shoulda known he'd never heard of the term 'chain' in connection with a measuring device. We both kinda marveled of how much engineering/land surveying has changed since I was a kid (his age) today we have robots, gps, GPS, autocadd, data collectors etc..

Believe me, I am a big proponent of mentoring/teaching.
I am 40.5 years of age, this 'kid' is 21. So to quote Bruce Springstein I wonder what 'boring stories' he'll tell of his 'glory days' in the engineering world.

Big E

not sure where I saw this bit, but liked it so much I have it saved:

In the world of hi-tech gadgetry, I've noticed that more and more people who send text messages and emails have forgotten the art of capitalization.

For those of you who fall into this category, please take note of the following statement:

"Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off his horse,

and helping your uncle jack off his horse."

So now… is everyone clear on that?

(maybe this should have been under humor)

The first day of my surveying career the owner told me "you don't know dick about surveying". That was between my freshman and sophmore years in college. He was right! He also pushed me to get my BS in surveying.

Today we have a great relationship. I'll call him with business questions, and he calls me about least squares and GPS questions.

Just remember colleges give out degrees, I haven't found one yet that hands them out in ambition!
