Dane, what O/S are you running? Windows 7 should recognize it. What DC? I still use the cords with both the FC120 (which has blue tooth, which apparently was only installed on the DC just to PI$$ me off!) and my old 48.

What DC are you using? Do you have USB? Nine pin serial port? You should be able to connect most DCs to a laptop using Activesync or the new "mobile device center", if you have USB options it might just recongnize the DC like an external HD (like the way a camera works). How you do it depends on your hardware. Tells us what you got.

I have a serial to usb converter.

If you have an older laptop you might have a serial port. If not then you probably just have a 9 pin display port.

Should work if you set bit rate, parity, etc to match each other on pc and dc.

I still may not understand what you are asking. Check your DC and PC and make sure all of that matches up and should work no problem.

Dane,

Do a search for null modem. There was a rather lengthy discussion about this a few weeks ago. I would post link, but I cannot figure out how to cut and paste with my Nook. Sorry!

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

Jimmy

John I am not sure

I am not sure that I know how to ask the question. I am trying to connect to windows devices via a serial com port connection.

John I am not sure

It's not clear whether you're trying to test the devices or the port, but if it's the port you might want to take a look at Verifying A Serial Port. The procedure descirbed allows you to test a com port via a loopback cable arrangement. I'm not sure how comprehensively this will test a USB-to-com-port converter, but it's a place to start.

Hyperterminal

I didn't realize that Hyperterminal isn't included in Windows 7, but you can download it here. I did so and tried the test on COM1 on my Windows 7 64bit machine, and it worked as described.

As an alternative to the link above, if you have an XP machine running you can copy the relevant file(s) from it to your Windows 7 computer.

jim Hyperterminal

I am using windows xp. There are no serial ports. I have a usb to serial driver installed and a usb-serial cable connected. Device manager shows it in com 1. If i move the cable to a different usb port then device manager will show a different com port active. If the conversion is entirely unplugged, device manager will show no com ports at all. I tried the hypertermial test of echo back and it did not appear to work.
In the meantime I twiddle me thumbs waiting for parts to come so that I can figure out if I just purchased $2000 worth of paper weights.

Thanks very much for your help

Dane,

I am sure that we can collectively figure it out. There is a ton of expertise and experience on this board.

What parts are you waiting for?

OKay the wrap-up

The unit I purchased from an EBAY auction came with a WYE cable, lemo, automobile connector and a 9 pin serial. It turns out the 9 pin was not wired for serial port communication. This problem was fixed by making an adapter to flip a couple of the pinouts. Using a USB/SERIAL driver and conversion cable, I located com1. I ran the update batch file, downloaded from Unavco. 10 minutes latter the unit beeped and powered off. I turned the unit back on and the firmware appears to loaded.ere

Almost there

Thanks everyone for all your help
